TOUR VERSATILITY, POWER, AND CONTROL
The Apex Utility Wood is the go-to option for the best players on Tour. The unique profile promotes the launch and distance benefits of our high lofted fairway woods, the versatility of Callaway hybrids, along with a more neutral ball flight. It’s a multi-purpose offering that better players can use with confidence off the tee into tight landing areas, out of the fairway into Par-5s, or from the rough.
TOUR-INSPIRED COMPACT, WORKABLE SHAPE & OPTIMIZED LENGTH
The distinct clubhead shaping is inspired by in-depth feedback from Tour pros. They require a compact profile to enhance shot-shaping and improve control. Club lengths are set between a fairway wood and a hybrid, allowing for versatile playability while still being easy to hit.
FAST BALL SPEED FROM BATWING TECHNOLOGY & AN A.I. DESIGNED C300 FACE CUP
The A.I.-designed Batwing structure is pushed to the perimeter to stiffen the body, allowing the high-strength C300 maraging steel face cup to flex for fast ball speeds.
ENHANCED TURF INTERACTION FROM CUTWAVE PRO SOLE
The Apex UW is designed for versatile shot-making. An all-new Cutwave Pro Sole is a streamlined design, engineered specifically to cut through the turf more efficiently.
HIGH LAUNCH, CONSISTENT CONTROL AND TIGHTER DISPERSION
The center of gravity is precisely positioned in a neutral location for an exceptional combination of high launch, steeper landing angles, consistent spin characteristics and reduced draw bias. The Apex UW is an excellent option for better players looking for a more playable hybrid or fairway wood.

To push the limits of your game, you need a ball with all the right ingredients. That’s why the entire Z-STAR Series was designed to deliver tour-level distance, control and feel, from tee to green. Starring a reformulated FastLayer DG Core and improved Spin Skin+ coating, you, too, can experience the formula trusted by Major Champions when wins are on the line.
FASTLAYER DG CORE
The trade-off is age-old: hard cores are fast, soft cores are slow. But the firmer a golf ball, the harsher it feels at impact, which can reduce your confidence when the pressure is on. That’s why our new FastLayer DG Cores are soft at the center and get firmer from the inside out. The contrasting compression helps them rebound quicker off the face for incredible distance while still providing exceptional feel.
NEW SPIN SKIN+ COATING
This micronic layer of specialized urethane increases the cover’s degree of friction for even more spin and control.
THIN, PREMIUM COVER
Every Z-STAR Series golf ball features an extra thin, thermoplastic urethane cover to provide tour-level stopping power around the greens.
SPEED DIMPLE PATTERN
With their deep dimensions, the 338 Speed Dimples on each Z-STAR Series golf ball punch through air for a penetrating launch. Once aloft, the dimples generate lift, driving the ball upward toward its peak and maximizing glide distance during descent. When conditions get tough and the winds reach high speeds, the 338 Speed Dimples’ low drag coefficient helps the ball stay on target through the moving air and maintain distance in headwinds.

Feel is born in the forge. On Z-Forged II, Srixon precision forged 1020 Carbon Steel to create an Iron that puts premium feel and exceptional playability at your fingertips. Designed in close collaboration with Srixon’s professional tour staff, Z-Forged II is a highly-workable muscle back blade for skilled players demanding the most from forged feel.
PUREFRAME
Carefully crafted from 1020 Carbon Steel, Z-Forged II features enhanced feel thanks to PureFrame. The shaping feature strategically adds mass right where you strike the ball for unmatched feel, playability, and performance.
BLADE SHAPING
Z-Forged II offers everything you’d expect from a contemporary blade design: a compact players package with precision shaping and a stunningly clean address profile. Shaping on the back of the head optimizes CG location and MOI without sacrificing any of the feel or workability demanded by the purest of ball strikers.
PROGRESSIVE GROOVES
The 3i–7i feature wide grooves, ideal for longer shots in all conditions. The 8i–PW have deeper, closer-set grooves which cut through grass and debris to enhance spin on approach shots. Laser milling between each groove, on every loft, enhances friction in all conditions.
TOUR V.T. SOLE
Using a proprietary combination of sole-widths, bounce angles, and toe/heel notches, Tour V.T. Sole takes turf interaction to a whole new level of detail. Highly regarded by Srixon tour staff, this unique sole technology encourages a smooth glide through fairway, rough and sand so you can strike the ball solidly without losing speed.

When it comes to gear some players are quick to change while others like to take their time. In the case of U.S. Open contestants and previous major winners, Matt Fitzpatrick and Sergio Garcia, they generally aren’t the ones to make quick decisions, which is why their new club choices on the eve of the first round at Pinehurst No. 2 are so interesting.

Well known for being meticulous about every element of his game, thanks to his appearances on Netflix’s Full Swing series, Matt is not one to make equipment changes lightly. But, after recently talking about his need to add spin and control to his iron game, this week at Pinehurst he has moved into a fresh set of Titleist T100 irons from his previous Ping Blueprint S irons.

He is still using Ping i230s for his longer irons but his mid and short irons have been swapped out just this week since he was seen last week at the Memorial — where he finished in a tie for fifth place, with the Blueprints still in the bag.

When comparing the two models, the T100s have a degree more loft through the set than the Pings, which should help produce the extra spin Matt has been looking for.

It could also be that the thin soles of the T100s are helping Matt get through the firm sandy turf on Pinehurst No. 2 better and a combination of the extra spin and ground interaction are what led to the change.

On the other hand, former Masters champion Sergio Garcia has made a career out of changing putters, and this week he was seen using a Never Compromise Reserve Model 4.

Even with putter changes occurring fairly frequently, this marks one of the first times a new Never Compromise Reserve putter has arrived at a major championship. The brand was relaunched in the spring after years on the shelf. Garcia has his putter fitted with a BGT Stability graphite putter shaft.

For consumers, the Never Compromise Reserve putters come in both a tour satin finish and contrast look which offers extra alignment and nostalgia for golfers who remember the original putters from the 90s and early 2000s that had a contrasting grey and black finish.

Proto surfaces again

TaylorMade’s better-player irons typically run on a two-year cycle, which is important when trying to figure out whether a “Tour prototype” is simply a prototype or a future retail offering.

Over the last few weeks, two high-profile names have added a new cavity-back prototype to the bag. It started with Rory McIlroy adding a Proto 4-iron at the Valero Texas Open and continued last week with Collin Morikawa adding the same 4-iron (above) to his setup at the RBC Heritage.

McIlroy offered some interesting insights a few weeks ago on the better-player profile: “Launch is a little higher, which was surprising,” he said, “and it’s just sometimes I felt like when I hit my 5-iron in the blade and then the 4-iron in the 760 it was such a different feel. To go from a 5-iron now to that (new) 4-iron feels a little closer to what I feel in the 5-iron.”

For the moment, two elite ball-strikers are using the Proto. Expect that number to increase in the coming months. With the iron surfacing on Tour in April and the current P7MC approaching two years — it’s logical to assume this might not be a “Tour proto” for long.

Back in black

Switching irons during the middle of the season can be a cause for concern — unless you’re simply trying to get into a new cosmetic. In Sepp Straka’s case, he made a lateral switch from Srixon’s ZX7 MKII into ZX7 MKII Black Chrome at the RBC Heritage.

The only difference? A new “black chrome” finish that makes the iron head look visually smaller at address. Straka didn’t skip a beat on his way to a T12 finish — even with a fresh set in the bag.

Iron specs: ZX7 MKII Black Chrome | 4-9 | True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts | +1/4″ length | D4 swingweight | Golf Pride Tour Velvet Midsize grips

Long time coming

Patrick Cantlay debuted a new set of Ping Blueprint S irons in recent weeks that have been in the works for five months. According to Ping Tour rep Kenton Oates, Cantlay began testing the irons back in December to get acclimated to the look, sound and performance on the course.

As someone who rarely changes gear, Cantlay was never going to rush an iron switch. Ping reps figured a change might happen at some point, but no one expected Cantlay would actually break them in for the first time at the Masters.

Following a positive first week at Augusta with Blueprint S, the 32-year-old made a few minor adjustments at Harbour Town, including the addition of bounce grind to improve turf interaction. Cantlay also left the event with a fresh set of Blueprint T’s to test at home.

There’s a chance Rory McIlroy could follow Tommy Fleetwood’s lead and keep TaylorMade’s BRNR Mini in the bag for the long haul. But we wouldn’t recommend holding your breath. Teeing it up on arguably the tightest layout on the PGA Tour — outside of maybe Colonial Country Club — McIlroy chose to add a 13.5-degree BRNR Mini Copper to find the tightest landing spots.

“It’s a great club, it’s versatile,” McIlroy said.

The club didn’t see much action during the opening round — McIlroy said he hit it three times, due to the wind being out of the south — but McIlroy still managed to produce some impressive shots over the next three days with Mini, including a drive that went well over 300 yards.

TaylorMade staffers have been on a roll this season. Nelly Korda and Scottie Scheffler made it five straight titles and four out of five with wins at the Chevron Championship and RBC Heritage. And then there’s 15-year-old Miles Russell, who signed an NIL agreement with TaylorMade last week.

The AJGA Rolex Junior Player of the Year made noise of his own at the Korn Ferry Tour’s LECOM Suncoast Classic, becoming the youngest player to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at 15 years and five months old.

“I have had a great relationship with the team at TaylorMade for years now and couldn’t be more excited to continue to work with them in the future,” Russell. “TaylorMade has a history of developing the top junior talent in the world to help reach their goals of becoming PGA TOUR and major championship winners. I am looking forward to working with the team to reach those and other goals I have laid out for my career.”

Quick-hitters: TaylorMade’s UDI prototype (2-iron) was spotted in Nick Dunlap’s bag at Harbour Town. … Sixteen of the 18 events played this season on the PGA Tour have been won with a Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball. The impressive run has also seen 70 percent of all competitors use a Titleist model during the stretch.

Here’s how they stack up

***

Aim small, miss small

More ball speed is a nice-to-have, especially when it’s paired with a tight dispersion. Having the ability to keep the ball as close to the center line as possible, even on mishits, is the ultimate goal for club designers. But it’s not always a reality. Pulling one performance lever generally requires sacrifices in other areas.

However, that wasn’t the case with Cleveland’s Launcher XL2 driver during robotic testing. Boasting the smallest dispersion pattern (5.1 yards) of any driver we tested on the Golf Laboratories swing robot, the XL2 is geared to keep the ball on the map — even if consistent contact isn’t one of your strong suits.

Compared to the previous Launcher XL, dispersion improved from 6.8 yards to 5.1 yards. Cleveland already boasted one of the most accurate drivers before the release of XL2, but they somehow managed to make it even more accurate with the second iteration.

As you’ll notice in the insights below, consistency is at the heart of what makes XL2 one of the more impressive drivers to go through robotic testing.

Consistent numbers

The Launcher XL2 boasts a larger overall face profile by 2 percent (heel-to-toe) and 12 percent (top-to-bottom).

              Dunlop Sports

A tight dispersion goes hand in hand with consistent carry distance numbers across all 9 impact locations, which is something we saw from XL2 during testing. Toe strikes went from losing 5.9 yards (Launcher XL) to just 3.3 yards (Launcher XL2), at 95 mph, while heel strikes stayed within the median range with a distance delta of 12 yards.

Overall, the distance loss on off-center strikes between Launcher XL and Launcher was within the noise at 8.7 yards versus 9.7 yards. It remains a strong option if you don’t routinely find the center of the club face.

More of a good thing

Having already established XL2 as one of the most consistent products in the marketplace, we can confirm it’s also faster than its predecessor. With Cleveland’s new Mainframe XL face leading the way, XL2 saw carry distance increase by 5 yards (226 yards versus 221 yards) with a similar launch angle and spin rate.

The Mainframe XL face design lives up to the hype with impressive ball speed numbers.

              Ryan Barath/GOLF

The numbers back up Cleveland’s claims that the variable thickness face increases the effective sweet spot for improved ball speed. With its rebound frame playing a role as well, the head can flex more efficiently at impact for a better energy transfer.

The end result is a driver that’s fast and accurate. Golfers struggling in both areas will no doubt want to give Cleveland’s latest offering strong consideration when it comes time to start the driver search.

Pull back the cover on any golf ball and you’re guaranteed to find several different components — the most prominent of which is the core.

Known as the engine, the core determines how the golf ball is going to perform with every club in the bag. In recent years, engineers have found ways to decouple long-game distance and short-game spin with mantle layers and reformulated cores. Or, in the case of Srixon’s latest Q-Star Tour, “core layers.”

              A look at Q-Star Tour’s FastLayer core.

              Dunlop Sports

The FastLayer core housed inside Srixon’s latest ball offering has been reformulated for a slightly higher compression rating that’s the result of thousands of layers creating a gradual soft-to-firm transition. With a firmer outer core, speed and distance increase at faster swing speeds. However, the ball still retains its soft feel and greenside performance through a supple inner core.

“The new Q-Star Tour is a high-caliber option for players wanting to hit the ball farther, see more spin around the greens, and have more control across the course,” said Brian Schielke, Srixon’s general manager. “Players can work the ball tee to green with confidence and with an updated FastLayer Core, they can generate more ball speeds and distance without compromising feel.”

How do you maintain greenside spin when the core gets firmer? With Q-Star Tour, the urethane cover was made even softer to allow the wedge grooves to grab the material for increased zip and control. The cover also features a Spin Skin super-polymer called SeRM (“Slide-Ring Material”) that allows for “unprecedented levels of shearing force without breaking its molecular bonds.”

In layman’s terms, the super-polymer is what makes it even easier for the groove to grab the urethane cover and generate efficient spin, especially around the green.

To help reduce drag and increase lift, a 338 Speed Dimple design was added to the cover to produce ideal aerodynamic conditions. The lower drag coefficient means the ball cuts through the air with less resistance for a penetrating flight. Reducing drag also leads to a more consistent, straighter flight in windy conditions. The higher lift coefficient lifts the ball throughout the descent, improving carry distance numbers at the same time.

Q-Star comes in two colors (white and yellow), along with a second-generation Divide design that splits the urethane cover into two colors — blue/yellow, orange/yellow and red/yellow. The 360-degree, 50/50 design makes it easier to see how the ball is spinning on putts, chips and pitch shots.

Srixon’s Q-Star Tour and Q-Star Tour Divide retail for $34.99 per dozen.

If you’re like most weekend golfers, the driver sees more action off the tee than any other club in the bag. Boasting the largest sweetspot and potential for game-changing distance, it’s no surprise golfers lean heavily on the big stick.

But what happens when the driver misbehaves? In most cases, a 3-wood is the next club to get the call. As we learned from the latest round of robotic testing with Golf Laboratories’ swing robot, some 3-woods are designed to provide driver-like mishit protection across the entire face. Yes, that means the heel and toe.

If you’re in need of a strong secondary option off the tee but don’t possess consistent impact, these 5 options are worth consideration and further testing.

(Testing protocol: Each 15-degree fairway wood was tested with the swing-robot at 95 mph using the same stiff-flex shaft and attack angle. Golf balls were hit out of the geometric center, high-toe and low-heel to determine an average distance dropoff.)

FLIGHT TUNING SYSTEM / MOI+
The Flight Tuning System is weighting design on a sliding track features a 20-gram weight at the extreme trailing edge on the sole of the clubhead.Sliding the weight on the adjustable track allows for a +/- 10-yard heel and toe bias in directional flight. For example, if you were to slide the weight all the way to edge of the Fade position, your flight would adjust 10 yards to the right for a right-handed player, and vice versa for the Draw setting. The E723 Driver’s extreme low rearward CG position produces an extremely high MOI at a 5600 g/cm2 MOI, the highest MOI driver we have ever produced. This leads to increased stability at impact and tighter dispersion. It’s a 5% increase in MOI over the previous E design.
360° RIDGEBACK TECHNOLOGY
Tour Edge engineers created a thinner, more refined Ridgeback activation for E723 with increased structural properties and 360-degree perimeter weighting. The Titanium Ridgeback spine running from the center of the face through the crown now wraps around the entire perimeter to frame the entire clubhead. The additional perimeter Titanium has boosted MOI significantly. This Ridgeback spine and now 360- degree activation acts as a brace for the entire clubhead to produce more power across the entire face, including the extreme perimeters.Adding Titanium to the perimeter, along with Ridgeback down the center, allows more support on off center hits to increase face deflection. The additional perimeter Titanium has boosted MOI significantly. This Ridgeback spine and now 360-degree activation acts as a brace for the entire clubhead to produce more power across the entire face, including the extreme perimeters. The E723 Ridgeback design is 15% thinner than the previous E722 model, while offering greater structural support properties.Ridgeback is designed to create superior feel at impact. The extra rigidity created by the brace through the crown produces a much stronger feel at impact when compared to a full carbon crown and results in a crisper and brighter feel at strike.
QUAD CARBON TECH
Tour Edge engineers replaced extra Titanium from the crown and sole by creating Quad Carbon Tech in four different areas of the clubhead. The E723 features 5% more carbon fiber than its previous iteration. The addition of Quad Carbon Tech saves considerable weight in the clubhead, allowing for the 360-degree Ridgeback design, an increase in MOI, greater face flex in the heel and toe areas so off- center hits achieve greater power. This weight savings has been re-purposed to the ideal location to help with creating optimal CG location.
DIAMOND FACE VFT
The new Diamond Face VFT is made up of diamond shapes of variable face thickness behind the face. There are 61 total diamond shapes featured on Diamond Face VFT, comprising seven different thicknesses in an interweaving pattern. The face thickness of the new Diamond Face VFT is thinner on the heel and toe on the E723 Driver. The mini trampolines that make-up Diamond Face VFT create faster ball speeds and an expanded sweet spot. The increase in Diamond Face coverage to the extreme heel and toe dramatically increases ball speed on off-center hits while also greatly aiding forgiveness on these strikes.

Rebound Frame’s Dual Flex Zones focus more energy into the golf ball at impact, creating a purer energy transfer that instantaneously increases ball speed and distance on every strike.
CANNON SOLE
A dynamic, floating weight pad moves the weight right where you want it without reducing COR, optimizing launch while also allowing space for improved face flex and ball speed. Especially helpful for shots struck low.

The Ryder Cup isn’t exactly the ideal spot to break in new gear. Then again, the driver Brooks Koepka packed for the trip to Rome isn’t what you’d consider “new.”

In a move that’s sure to raise some eyebrows, the five-time major winner swapped his Srixon ZX5 LS MKII driver for TaylorMade’s SIM2 ahead of the biennial matches.

It’s important to note Koepka has a history with TaylorMade clubs that dates back to his time as an equipment free agent when he won four major championships in three years. Even when he inked a multi-year deal with Cleveland/Srixon at the end of 2021, Koepka retained the 16.5-degree TaylorMade M2 Tour HL fairway wood from his previous setup.

While the SIM2 might feel like a new addition, Koepka chose to reinsert the two-year-old driver last week during LIV’s Chicago event to see how it performed. He finished T24, eight shots back of eventual winner Bryson DeChambeau.

This is actually the second TaylorMade driver Koepka has used in the last year, dating to the 2022 U.S. Open where he briefly used an older model TaylorMade M5 driver before making the eventual transition into ZX5 LS MKII.

As for SIM2, it was Koepka’s driver of choice for most of 2021 and was in the bag during his victory at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, so there’s some familiarity with the performance and setup. (Koepka actually switched from M5 to SIM2 that week.)

Something else that’s interesting about SIM2? It just so happens to be the last driver TaylorMade produced with a titanium face before they made the shift to a carbon composite construction with the introduction of Stealth.

Koepka’s driver change doesn’t come close to the time Phil Mickelson jumped from Titleist to Callaway and completely overhauled his setup nine days before the 2004 Ryder Cup, but it’s still an interesting storyline to monitor as the U.S. prepares to defend the Ryder Cup on foreign soil.
