Cameron Davis looked to his left and laughed. Then he smiled. Then he laughed again.

There are breaks. And there are great breaks. And then there are laugh-smile-laugh-again breaks, the kind where you know you got away with something so silly, that all you can do is laugh, smile and laugh again.

“That might be worth three shots to him if he knocks that in,” analyst Nick Faldo said on Golf Channel’s broadcast.

Indeed. Davis, during Thursday’s first round of the Northern Trust, sliced his tee shot right on the par-4 16th at Liberty National, then he leaned over as his ball nosedived toward the water right of the green. Only it finished 9 feet from the hole. The ball bounced off a small collection of rocks, ricocheted forward about 30 yards — then bounced off a tent behind the green and ricocheted backward toward the green.

“Ooh, he might be dry,” Faldo said on the broadcast in real time. “He might be on the 8th tee. Oh no, it bounced back. It’s on.

“What?”

“What?” announcer Terry Gannon said.

What the heck would also work. Davis went from a penalty to a putt for eagle. He’d make it and, after digging his ball out from the cup, laughed. Then he smiled. Then he laughed.

He knew the break he got.

“That is some two,” analyst Frank Nobilo said.

Cam Davis, on the par-4 16th at Detroit Golf Club, had a 39-footer to pull within a tie for the lead during Sunday’s final round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He hit it 4 feet short. He hit his second putt just past the right edge of the cup. Three-putt, and now two down with three holes to go. He even struggled, for a second, to pluck his ball from the hole. The gallery was quiet, except for a lone:

“Oh man.”

On his next hole, the par-5 17th, Davis dunked a wedge from the left greenside bunker for an eagle three to move into a five-way tie at the top. On the next hole, the par-4 18th, Davis dropped a 6-footer for a birdie three to move into now a three-way tie, where it stayed after everyone came back to the clubhouse. Then after five playoff holes, one with Joaquin Niemann and all five with Troy Merritt, Davis finished as a first-time PGA Tour winner.

Man, oh man, oh man.

Davis, who played his final two holes at three under, shot a final-round five-under 67, then parred the par-3 15th, the fifth hole of a playoff, to prevail. It’s the 26-year-old Australian’s first victory on Tour, following a win at the 2017 Australian Open and a win on the Korn Ferry Tour.

“It’s been pretty hectic ever since the 17th hole for me,” Davis said. “I don’t know, I just tried to put as much out of my mind as I could and just hit every shot for what it was worth. As simple as that’s said, it’s so hard to do when the pressure’s on like that. I just kept on putting good swings on it. I guess I didn’t make any putts, but I kept on putting it in play, so it worked out all right.”

Davis was right on all three statements there — in the playoff, he didn’t make any putts, he kept it in play, and it worked out all right.

On the first extra hole, back at the 18th, he missed a 6-footer for birdie that would have won it. Merritt, meanwhile, two-putted for par, and Niemann bogeyed his first hole of the entire week and was done; he was seeking to be the third player ever to win a tournament while going bogey free.

On the second playoff hole, the par-3 15th, Davis hit his tee shot to 20 feet, but missed another birdie putt that would have won it. Merritt, meanwhile, had hit his tee shot into the left greenside bunker and got up and down for par. On the third playoff hole, back at the par-4 16th, Davis missed a 25-footer for birdie that would have ended it, and Merritt made a 5-footer for par. On the fourth playoff hole, back at the par-5 14th, after both players hit the green in two, both players two-putted, Davis missing a 19-footer that would have won it.

Soak it in, @CamDavisGolf. 👏 pic.twitter.com/pmD09BYZ9V
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) July 4, 2021

On the fifth playoff hole, on the par-3 15th, Davis missed his fifth straight putt that would have given him the victory, but this time Merritt could not match after missing the green with his tee shot. The five-hole playoff follows last week’s eight-holer at the Travelers Championship, won by Harris English.

“Cam did what he had to do, he put it on the green every hole, had a chance to win five times, hit great putts and he just played fantastic,” Merritt said. “So my hat’s off to him.”

About five hours earlier, when Niemann and Merritt teed off in the final pairing, a whopping 26 players were three shots back of the two leaders, or better. At various points, eight players held at least a share of the lead — Davis, Merritt, Niemann, Bubba Watson, Jason Kokrak, Kevin Kisner, Alex Noren and Hank Leboida — before Davis, Merritt and Niemann finished at 18 under. Noren and Leboida would end up at 17 under, while Watson and Brandon Hagy finished at 16 under.

“Cam played fantastic in the playoff; he had putt after putt to win,” Merritt said. “He did what he had to do and great champion.”

The big takeaway

Go ahead and add Cam Davis among the young players to watch on Tour. His length makes many courses a whole lot smaller.

“I guess you just have to fall back on the fact that you hit really good shots to get there. I kept on making really good quality swings and every single time I wasn’t thinking about where don’t I want to miss it. It was always just keep your eyes locked on where you want to go and feel the swing was going to put the ball there and just go in there and trust it. There’s definitely room for nerves to set in if you do start kind of letting your mind wander, but I felt like I was really deliberate and did a good job of that and I think that kept me going all the way through each hole of the playoff and at the end of regulation as well.” — Davis, on his ability to bounce back in the playoff

Here’s what you need to know about the purse at the Country Club of Jackson, including payout information and winner’s share.

Sanderson Farms Championship Preview

Davis, Poston and Garcia are tied for the lead at 14 under heading into the final round on Sunday after an action-filled moving day in Mississippi. Davis — who vaulted himself into the final pairing on Sunday with a third-round 63 — saw an improvement of 10 strokes on his score from Friday to Saturday. The 25-year-old Australian is searching for his first-ever PGA Tour victory on Sunday, looking to join Poston with one career win.

Sergio, on the other hand, is looking to grab career win number 36 with his eyes closed, literally. The 40-year-old Spaniard admitted earlier this week that he has been closing his eyes at impact while putting for several years. Coincidentally, Garcia is in pursuit of his first win on North American soil since the Masters in 2017. We’ll let you determine whether the relationship is correlation or causation, but a win on Sunday would give Garcia his first professional win of any kind since the KLM Open a year ago.

Below is the payout information and winner’s share for the Sanderson Farms’ $6.6 million purse; you can catch all the action Sunday on Golf Channel beginning at 4:00 p.m. ET.

The 2020 Sanderson Farms Championship is through three rounds, and the leaderboard is as packed as it is eclectic. From major champions to Monday qualifiers, there are plenty of intriguing storylines to follow as we head into the final round. Here’s everything you need to know to watch Sunday’s action.

Previewing Sanderson Farms Round 4

Cameron Davis was the biggest winner on moving day in Mississippi as he fired a blistering 63 to jump into a tie for the lead. His bogey-free round featured seven birdies and an eagle as he earned a late tee time on Sunday as he goes for his first PGA Tour win.

Sergio Garcia also took advantage of the favorable scoring conditions on Saturday as he shot a six-under 66 to tie Davis for the lead. Garcia has not earned a win since his epic 2017 Masters victory and will look to end that drought on Sunday armed with his eyes-closed putting method.

J.T. Poston also joined the party at 14 under to stake a share of the lead. Poston made five birdies en route to a third round 69 and will play in the penultimate pairing tomorrow. In all, there are 13 players within four shots of the lead, so there is sure to be some excitement come tomorrow.

We are officially through three rounds at the Sanderson Farms Championship, and the leaderboard is packed. Thirteen players sit within four shots of the lead, so Sunday is sure to be a shootout for the title in Jackson.

So what should we keep an eye on in the final round? Here are three things you need to know from Round 3.

Sergio Garcia has found his form

Sergio Garcia has struggled mightily since his 2017 Masters win, but you wouldn’t know it based on his play this week. Garcia followed up his back-to-back rounds of 68 with a 66 on Saturday and he’s in prime position to earn his 11th PGA Tour win on Sunday. His spectacular play on Saturday vaulted Garcia into a tie for the lead as he’ll play in the final pairing tomorrow.

If Garcia is able to get the victory on Sunday, he’ll have done it employing an unusual eyes-closed putting technique. The method was the talk of the day Friday, and it seems to be serving him well this week. So far, he’s got 17 birdies and just three bogeys. It might be unorthodox, but it seems to be working.

Putting with his eyes closed.

It's working for @TheSergioGarcia.#QuickHits pic.twitter.com/GpSz2487HB
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) October 2, 2020

Cameron Davis was on fire

Cameron Davis was in the zone on Saturday. The Australian began his day with five straight birdies, and he continued that momentum throughout the rest of the day as he added two birdies and an eagle to shoot a nine-under 63. The round is career low on Tour and puts him in excellent position to chase his first career victory tomorrow.

A new career-low for @CamDavisGolf. ✍

9-under 63 has him 2 clear @Sanderson_Champ. pic.twitter.com/5H5KbLOulg
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) October 3, 2020

“I was just in the groove,” Davis said. “I just hit a few really close, and it’s nice when you do it a few times in a row, and when the ball is rolling in with the putter, yeah, it’s nice to get on the train.”

Davis’ round was the low on the day as he vaulted himself from a tie for 24th into a share of the lead by day’s end. The round was also the lowest of the week so far. If he wants to nab that first title tomorrow, he’ll need to carry the momentum into the final pairing.

Clock strikes midnight for Cinderella

MJ Daffue came into the week without a spot in the field. He then fired 69 in the Monday qualifier and had to survive and eight-for-two playoff to earn his way into the championship. Daffue picked up where he left off on Thursday as he shot 65 and followed it with a 69 in Round 2. Going from a Monday qualifier to one of the final groups on the weekend is almost unheard of, but there he was.

Unfortunately for Daffue, the clock struck midnight on his Cinderella story in Round 3. Instead of the stellar play he showed in the first two rounds, Daffue was never able to get anything going on Saturday. He made two bogeys early and struggled to get many birdies to drop while he posted an even-par round of 72. The score dropped him into a tie for 11th and most likely out of contention come Sunday.

However, not all hope is lost for the journeyman. If he can finish in the top 10, he’ll earn himself a start in next week’s Shriners Hospital for Children’s Open. He surely would have preferred to be playing for a chance at earning a two-year exemption, but as a Monday qualifier, the opportunity to earn even one more start is a win.
