For the average golfer, the odds of making a hole-in-one are roughly 12,500 to 1. But the probabilities are even slimmer of jarring a tee shot in the manner Guy Mosley recently did.

Mosley, 34, is a caddie at the Dormie Club, a private course in West End, N.C., where he has worked for the past four seasons.

He calls it his “dream job.”

“I never have a bad day at the office,” Mosely told GOLF.com by phone this week.

A recent Thursday was even better than most.

The day in question — June 26, 2025 — began ordinarily enough. Mosley was looping for an amiable threesome, the same trio for whom he’d carried the day before. The round was flying by, and Mosley was fielding the usual questions — How far to the flagstick? What’s the wind doing? Which way does this one break? — when one of the guys hit him with a query that every caddie gets from time to time.

“So, do you play?”

Born in Singapore, and raised on the islands of Saipan and Guam, Mosley was never a competitive golfer. But he learned the game early while accompanying his father on business trips to Florida, and though he gave it up for years to devote himself to basketball, a sport he played briefly in college, he retains a single-digit’s fluid swing.

So, did he play?

Mosley allowed that he could hold his own.

This happened on the tee of the par-3 16th hole, where Mosley was wiping down a club. He’d already given his players a number— 171 yards actual, wind-adjusted to 168. But now his players wanted something more from him. They wanted him to hit a shot.

At some courses, caddies are discouraged from taking whacks, even if their clients urge them to. But, Mosley said, the Dormie Club is not like that. The atmosphere is easy-going, and there’s no prohibition against that kind of fun. In the 600 or so rounds he’s logged as a looper, Mosley said he’s been called upon to hit about 100 times.

“I’ve hit hero shots and I’ve hit hosel rockets,” he said. “It’s probably about an 80 to 20 percent failure to success rate.”

That ratio was about to improve.

Mosley grabbed a Callaway Apex 8-iron from one of his player’s bags and teed up a TaylorMade ball that he’d found in the woods a few holes prior. He waggled, swung and . . . what were the odds?

In 2018, while caddying for his father in the Par 3 Contest at the Masters, Gary Nicklaus made a pinch-hit hole-in-one on the 9th hole. More recently, during a closest-to-the-pin contest among caddies at the 2025 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, Collin Morikawa’s then-bagman, J.J. Jakovac, aced the island-green 17th hole. Both moments were captured by TV cameras.

At the Dormie Club, one of the players had his iPhone out. You can watch the video below, which includes the sight and sound of a flushed tee shot, followed by the celebration of Mosley’s first-ever hole-in-one.

Drinks on him? Not exactly.

The Dormie Club is all-inclusive, so no bar tab for Mosley. And though his players asked if he’d liked to join them for a post-round beverage, Mosley thought it best to leave them on their own.

A stickler might point out this technicality: for a hole-in-one to count in the official ledger, it must be part of a nine- or 18-hole round, completed in accordance with the Rules of Golf.

But stickler is another word for stick-in-the-mud. It’s the memories that matter.

“All I know,” Mosley said, “is that the flag and ball are on my wall.”

Some 50 years ago, long before he worked for the likes of Curtis Strange, Greg Norman and Payne Stewart, Mike Hicks landed his first job as a caddie, carrying for a local pastor at his hometown club in North Carolina. Hicks was 12. His pay was $5 per loop.

In those days, caddying barely counted as a viable career. With rare exceptions, it was looked at as a stopgap for those lacking better options, or a summer gig for the Danny Noonans of the world. Hicks didn’t see it as a way to make a living.

“I never even entertained the idea,” he says.

In 1980, though, as an undergraduate at North Carolina State, Hicks was considering taking a semester off when a friend who caddied for the Tour pro J.C. Snead encouraged him to join him in California and tag along on the West Coast swing.

“He said, ‘You can work the pro-ams, and some Monday qualifiers. You’ll get by,’” Hicks says.

Hicks left home with $140 and returned eight weeks later having had a blast and doubled his money. He was 19. There was no looking back.

For Hicks, it was the start of a decades-long run as a respected Tour looper (an image of Hicks leaping into Stewart’s arms after his boss clinched the ’99 U.S. Open is part of the game’s iconography). He is 63 now, recently retired from the circuit. And the trade he practiced has been fully transformed.

Caddying these days does more than pay the bills. At high-end clubs and resorts, loopers routinely earn six-figure incomes. Caddies for top Tour pros are multimillionaires. The job has been professionalized. What’s often missing, though, is formalized professional training.

That’s something Hicks is trying to change.

A founding member of the Tour Caddie Collective, a network devoted to developing the next generation of caddies, Hicks has teamed up with his fellow Tour loopers Grant Berry and Heath Holt to launch the Professional Caddie Certification Program. Operated in conjunction with North Carolina State University’s Office of Professional Development, the program aims to offer 18 participants seven days and one night of intensive instruction covering every aspect of the job. The inaugural session starts Dec. 1.

“We’re going to be getting into all the nuances,” Hicks says.

In the cliche construction, caddying has three basic requirements: Show up, keep up and shut up.

That no longer applies.

For starters, Hicks says, “It’s the opposite of ‘shut up.” At elite levels, anyway, most players expect open communication, a point underscored every time the TV networks eavesdrop on Michael Greller and Jordan Spieth. From one partnership to another, and from one shot to the next, a caddie’s role can morph from sidekick to psychologist to bodyguard, and beyond. Quantitative skills are increasingly essential. So is emotional intelligence.

“A player-caddie relationship is like a marriage,” Hicks says. “But you also have to be a mathematician. You’re not just adding and subtracting. You’re dealing with percentages. You’re analyzing stats and using live data to help guys with course management.”

To help participants prepare for those wide-ranging demands, Hicks says the program will be taught by an array of instructors, including a sports psychologist, a physiotherapist, a PGA Tour official and experts in such technology as Trackman, Aimpoint and GC Quad.

There will even be a class in CPR.

“You tell me how many caddies out there know CPR,” Hicks says. “Hardly any, I’ll tell you that.”

Even as they care for their players, Hicks says, caddies need to learn to care for themselves.

“Stretching is a vital part of caddying,” Hicks says. “You need to eat well, and get proper rest.”

On those fronts, Hicks concedes, he fell short in his career.

“It’s pretty much a miracle that I’m still here,” he says.

But time is a great teacher, and he now has a chance to share what he’s learned with others. Though the plan is to make the program regularly recurring, a long-term schedule hasn’t yet been set. A second session is tentatively slated for February. But December’s inaugural session, Hicks says, is “a pilot” that he expects will evolve over time. The cost is $4,000 per participant.

“We want to get it going,” he says. “And we’ll see where it leads.”

Alison Lee swings. Ball lands on the green. Ball spins back. Ball drops in the hole.

Crowd goes wild. Caddies go wilder.

What in the world just happened?

After Lee, making her first appearance at the Solheim Cup in nine years for Team USA, holed her approach shot at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club’s second hole from 86 yards, her and partner Megan Khang’s caddies both ripped their shirts off in the ensuing frenzy.

You have to see this one to believe it.

The perfect celebration DOES exist
pic.twitter.com/bnyd55Kk6Z
— claire rogers (@kclairerogers) September 14, 2024

The eagle gave Lee and Khang an early 1 Up lead in their Saturday afternoon fourball match with Team Europe’s Sweadish duo of Anna Nordqvist and Madelene Sagstrom. But, perhaps more unlikely, their caddies’ celebration was choreographed just moments earlier.

According to Golf Channel’s Kay Cockerill, Khang’s caddie, Jack Fulghum, pitched a wager on the second tee. The best was that if either of the American players holed out during the match, the caddies would pay out $500.

Cockerill reported Lee immediately countered.

“No, if we hole out, you guys [the caddies] take your shirts off,” Lee said.

Just a few minutes later, Lee’s wedge dropped in the cup and her caddie Taylor “Shota” Takada and Fulghum had to pay up.

At first, Takada runs over to Lee, screaming before Khang joins in on the celebration. Takada keeps running around for a moment before disappearing from the NBC camera shot.

That’s when Fulghum walks over, Khang’s bag in one hand, his shirt and bib in the other with the kind of sheepish grin that you can only have when you lose a bet in the most thrilling way possible.

And as NBC’s Tom Abbott pointed out, Lee’s version of the bet saved each of the caddies $500 too!

The U.S. team will look to keep up that energy level through the rest of Saturday’s matches. The Americans entered the fourth of five sessions leading the Europeans 8 points to 4 as they look to regain possession of the Solheim Cup for the first time since 2017.

That doesn’t happen in Olympic golf, as, for example, Scottie Scheffler’s caddie Ted Scott, didn’t receive anything for helping Scheffler to Olympic gold. You could argue Scott played a whole lot more meaningful minutes than Haliburton did.

Scott’s fellow Team USA caddie, John Ellis, the looper for Wyndham Clark, wants to see that change. He says caddies for Olympic medalists should be getting medals too.

“I mean, it’s part of the team, right?” Ellis told GOLF in an interview this past week. “Like in basketball, some guys don’t play, you’re still part of that team. So I’d like to see in the future the caddie maybe be a part of it. I know it’s hard because then the swim coach might say they deserve it. Not that they do or don’t, but we’re actually in it. I’d like to think one day it could happen. But ultimately, it’s about our guys and we’re just trying to help them get a medal or play their best golf.”

GOLF chatted with Ellis on a number of topics to get a sense of what the Olympics was like for himself and the other caddies.

[This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.]

GOLF: You just came back from the Olympics in Paris. What’s different from the PGA Tour?

Ellis: As far as the golf and the tournaments, it’s not too much, but it was an unbelievable experience. It actually blew me out of the water. You know, I just assumed it would be essentially just another golf tournament and stepping on that first tee, representing your country and hearing the USA chants or even the other countries’ chants, it just seems so much bigger. And, you know, it was just so cool to be a part of obviously, when we’re here [in Memphis], you know, you’re playing for yourself.

GOLF: What was the dynamic like between you and the other Team USA caddies during the games? Was there a team atmosphere for you guys?

Ellis: One hundred percent. We played our practice rounds together and I’ve never seen so much good banter back and forth and rooting for each other. It was Wyndham and Scottie each day against Xander [Schauffele] and Collin [Morikawa] and they had great matches. It was just so cool to see the top four Americans right now, playing together, rooting for each other, competing against each other and ultimately hoping USA comes back with medals. Obviously, we didn’t get a medal, but USA got a medal and it seemed like we all kind of got a medal, right?

GOLF: Who won those matches between the four Americans?

Ellis: Scottie and Wyndham lost day one, won day two and then the grudge match went to Wyndham and Scottie on Wednesday, so it was really cool.

GOLF: What’s different for the caddies, specifically, at the Olympics versus on the PGA Tour?

Ellis: I mean maybe we work a little more together. I actually got sick on Tuesday and then the boys took care of me. They’re like, ‘Hey, we’ll help Wyndham around.’ Listen, the guys out here are amazing, but you know you’re out here for your team and we help each other, but you know when you’re doing it for the Olympics, it’s like I said, we all try to help each other. So the boys were kind enough to look after me and if I saw something on the course, I would say something.

GOLF: How much of the Games did you get to take in? Or was it all business?

Ellis: Thursday or Wednesday night, JJ Jakovac, Collin Morikawa’s caddie, and I went to swimming which was an awesome atmosphere. We got to see the French guy win two gold medals, break a world record. We got to see [Katie] Ledecky win the 1500. It was just so electric to be a part of that. It was just the coolest thing. And then Sunday night, Wyndham, his girlfriend and I went to the 100-meter race and watched Noah Lyles win the 100-meter run and a few other events. Those two events were pretty epic and Wyndham was lucky enough to get us good seats. In that atmosphere, I felt like I could run a 4.3 [second] 40 [yard-dash]!

GOLF: Was there anything you took away from watching all of these great athletes?

Ellis: Just the work and dedication and all that they put in. You know, we have different tournaments week in and week out and they put all this time and effort for the 100 meter, say for nine seconds, for four years.

GOLF: You have all these medals being given out in different sports, but in golf, there’s just one competition and just the golfer gets the medal. Do you think the caddies of the medal winners should also get medals?

Ellis: I do. I mean, it’s part of the team, right? Like in basketball, some guys don’t play, you’re still part of that team. So I’d like to see in the future the caddie maybe be a part of it. I know it’s hard because then the swim coach might say they deserve it. Not that they do or don’t, but we’re actually in it. I’d like to think one day it could happen. But ultimately, it’s about our guys and we’re just trying to help them get a medal or play their best golf.

GOLF: In golf, we usually just celebrate the winner, but we pay out the entire field. At the Olympics, we celebrate the top three players, but those are the only three who take away any prizes. How different is that to think about during the round?

Ellis: You know, this week [in Memphis] there’s only one winner. Well in the Olympics there are essentially three winners. Obviously the gold is the ultimate. But to me, silver and bronze are essentially the same thing. And if you’re sitting on that podium, you’ve won. I think that’s the way Wyndham looked at it too.

GOLF: Do you think that’s really been embraced?

Ellis: The atmosphere, the people, the hooting and hollering, the way the guys showed their emotion, the nerves that some guys show, you could tell it meant a lot. It has to be embraced from now on. Everyone’s going to want to make LA [2028] just because of that.

Yes, the golfers on the PGA Tour are the best in the world, but many of them also have elite sticks for caddies too.

Some players have a college teammate or coach who ends up looping for them in the pros. Other caddies are former pros themselves who decided to take up looping instead.

Take Rory McIlroy and his caddie Harry Diamond. Diamond was a pro himself at one point and won the 2012 West of Ireland Championship, the same tournament his current boss won twice, six years earlier.

There is also the story of the late Lance Ten Broeck, who caddied and played in the 2009 Valero Texas Open and beat his boss at the time, Jesper Parnevik.

That’s why Wyndham Clark’s caddie, John Ellis, a former assistant coach for the Oregon men’s golf team, thinks there should be a player-caddie event of some kind.

“I think it would be great TV because we’d be hitting some crop dusters and some s— shots, and our pros, and it would be so fun to watch as a golf fan,” Ellis told GOLF Subpar co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz. “And, you know, you get somebody like Teddy Scott, who’s on TV every day, like everybody knows him just as much as Scottie [Scheffler], Right? So it’d be great to see how us guys handle the heat of playing in a match.”

It’s an idea that’s been floated on Subpar before, most recently by Rickie Fowler’s caddie, Ricky Romano, last fall.

At that time, Romano was bullish on his and Fowler’s chances if such a competition were to take place. Ellis, meanwhile, stayed impartial instead of picking himself and Clark.

“Erik van Rooyen and his guy,” Ellis said with no hesitation on who would be the favorite.

Van Rooyen’s looper is his former college teammate at Minnesota, Alex Gaugert. Last summer, the two played in the same group for the first two days of the 3M Open after Gaugert successfully made it through his first PGA Tour Monday qualifier.

Ellis said van Rooyen and Gaugert would be a -130 favorite if some sort of event happened.

“Maybe we do that?” Knost wondered allowed.

We didn’t have to wait long for that answer as Mickelson showed up for LIV Golf Miami this week with new caddie Jon Yarbrough in tow for what will be Mickelson’s last start before next week’s Masters.

Golfweek was first to report the new arrangement after Mickelson announced Tim’s retirement in an emotional social media post last week. Tim had caddied for his older brother since 2017, but recently had a second son, Phil said in the post, and seemed to indicate he was stepping away to spend more time with his family.

Yarbough, a 20-year veteran, had been on the bag of Scott Stallings for the past decade and the two are close, but Golfweek reported Mickelson offered Yarbough “incredible” guaranteed money that helped sway him. Yarbough has also worked for Gary Woodland, Bill Haas and Smylie Kaufman as well as LPGA players Kelly Robbins, Morgan Pressel and Suzann Pettersen.

Stallings, a mainstay on the PGA Tour for more than a decade, qualified for the Tour Championship in 2022, but barely finished in the top 125 last year and has made only three cuts in nine starts in 2024. He withdrew from last week’s Texas Children’s Houston Open with his swing coach on the bag.

According to @ProGolfCritic on Twitter, Yarbough and Mickelson have already visited Augusta National to scout the course for the year’s first major next week. Last year, Mickelson, at 52, finished tied for second, becoming the oldest golfer to ever finish that high at the Masters.

Coincidentally, Mickelson’s previous caddie before his brother, Jim “Bones” Mackay, parted ways with his boss, Justin Thomas, on Tuesday. Mackay was the only caddie Mickelson knew as a professional, with the pair winning five majors together before splitting in 2017. Mackay worked as an on-course reporter for NBC and Golf Channel until 2021 when Thomas hired him out of retirement.

A reunion with Mickelson already seemed unlikely for Mackay, having auditioned for NBC’s lead analyst job already this season. He’s currently on assignment at Augusta for NBC and Golf Channel at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.

Every week PGA Tour caddies don simple, usually unassuming bibs while looping for their bosses. But at the Masters, the white coverall uniforms are almost as recognizable as the flowering bushes that line the fairways of Augusta National.

At Augusta, not only do the official caddies don the white coveralls, but so do the pint-sized fill-in caddies, aka the pros’ children, during the annual Par-3 Contest on Wednesday.

If you truly want to watch this year’s Masters in style, short of an authentic green jacket, there’s truly no better getup to channel the season’s first major like the white caddie uniform. If you’ve ever wanted to get one either for your Masters watch party, or you want to create your own version of the Masters with authentic uniforms, you’ve come to the right spot.

“When it comes to carry bags, Sun Mountain is one of my top choices. Their golf bags are lightweight, have plenty of room at the top to easily get clubs in and out, and they offer comfortable straps. Their stand system is also nice and stable so I don’t have to worry about it falling over.

“Next up, I’m a big fan of both the Jones Trooper and the Ping Hoofer bags that have a 4-way divider. Both of these options are lightweight and depending on the Jones model they have straps that can be carried on both sides; I know a lot of golfers aren’t worried about carrying two bags at once, but with a bag like the Jones, you can carry on either shoulder, which is a nice touch.”

“Another fun thing about the Ping bags is how they hide their rain hood in the hip/back pad on the bag so you never have to worry about it taking up extra space in the big side pocket or just completely forgetting it.”

“Another stand bag that stands out is the TaylorMade FlexTech. Like others, it has a stable leg system that quickly deploys and comfy straps that are easily adjusted. One thing that I like about the TaylorMade (and something that most of these bags have) is the big handle at the top that allows you to move it short distances without having to throw the straps on.”
