Travelogue
The
Pinehurst/Aberdeen/Southern Pines area of North Carolina is an eccentric
dreamland for golfers. There’s golf, more golf, and, yes, yet more golf still. Pine Needles and Mid Pines, sister properties across the street from one another serve as a welcome refuge away from the hustle and bustle of the sprawling
Pinehurst Resort. Both lodging options are quaint and cozy and ooze Southern charm. Pine Needles, designed by
Donald Ross in 1927 and recently renovated in 2017 by Kyle Franz in 2017, is no stranger to high-profile competition, having hosted four U.S. Women’s Opens. Its sandy, jagged bunkering makes it both stunning and challenging. Mid Pines, another Ross design was restored by Kyle Franz in 2013 and even though plays a smidge easier, it’s intrinsic “Ross-ness” makes it a challenge for any type of player. Both ought to be high atop your must-play list, especially if you’re a Ross fan.
