What beats staying at one of the best properties in golf? Booking the best room there. In this installment, we spotlight the Windsor Club Presidential Suite at The Greenbrier, in West Virginia. Check back here weekly for another swank suite.
Where: White Sulphur Springs, W.V.
What it costs: $25,000/night
What’s inside: Occupying two floors, the roomiest and most posh of the Greenbrier suites wows with seven bedrooms (each with king bed), a library, reception foyer, den with half-bath and a massive living room with grand piano. Guests enter via a private foyer and utilize a grand, sweeping staircase between floors. A formal dining room has entertained the likes of President Eisenhower, who held the North American Summit Conference here in 1956. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor and Prince Ranier and Princess Grace of Monaco are among the royalty and high-society denizens who have partaken of this special dwelling within The Greenbrier.
What else you get: Equal parts of historic West Virginia and rural mountain charm seamlessly blended with the service and amenities of the world’s finest hotels. Renowned for its spa services, which technically date to 1778, when its healing sulphur springs were first discovered, the hotel has since refined things a bit, but you can still immerse yourself in the same soak. The Greenbrier itself is an enormous Georgian structure with tall white columns, yet it fits comfortably into a landscape of trees, flowers and gentle mountain slopes. A dizzying array of activities awaits, including such unusual fare as sporting clays, casino gaming, falconry, bowling and first-run movies, but with three championship resort courses, including the Jack Nicklaus-designed Greenbrier (a past Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup venue) and C.B. Macdonald’s Old White (now a TPC course and host to the PGA Tour), golf is king.
For other budgets: Guest rooms in the main hotel start at $198 per night in the high season of summer and early fall and from $188 in the shoulder season of November. Unlimited Golf Package rates begin at $125 per person, per night, with a two-night minimum.
