It’s been an eventful week for Phil Mickelson. He’s joined Twitter, traded match-play barbs with Tiger Woods and flashed some strong play at The Northern Trust.
And Mickelson, fresh off a pair of 68s in his first two rounds at Ridgewood, got off to a another good start on Saturday. Playing the par-3 2nd hole, Mickelson took a swing with an eight-iron and watched as the ball tracked toward the pin.
A fan in the massive gallery said, “it’s gotta be better than Tiger’s” as soon as Mickelson made contact. Another fan screamed, “be rigggght.” Mickelson, a fan favorite in the region, responded seconds after making contact without ever taking his eyes off the ball.
“Oh, it is,” Mickelson said. Who knows exactly which fan Mickelson was responding to, but his reply was great regardless.
Mickelson stuffed it to a couple of feet and made his birdie putt to move to seven under for the tournament. Check out his shot below and The Northern Trust leaderboard here.
