Vijay Singh is back in the final pairing on the PGA Tour. Yes, it’s very much 2019.
The 56-year-old pro has not won on Tour since September 2008, but at six under, he’s just one shot back of Wyndham Clark after 54 holes at the Honda Classic. Singh carded the round of the day Saturday at PGA National, a 65, that featured six birdies.
“I’ve been working really hard every day,” Singh said Saturday. “I had a new move, and today it worked. But driving the ball is my issue. I was not driving the ball well at all. The first two days I just managed to get around, and today I drove the ball well, and on a golf course like this if you drive the ball well, you’re going to have a lot of opportunities.”
Singh never leaves himself short on opportunities. He has been lauded throughout his career as the ultimate grinder, hitting hundreds of balls on the driving range as the sun sets, trying all types of drills to strike up proper form and fitness. Right now, it’s working.
Singh winning would demolish the record for oldest winner on the PGA Tour. The current record holder is Sam Snead, who was 52 years, 10 months and eight days old when he won in 1965. Singh just turned 56 on February 22.
“I’m physically quite capable of doing it,” Singh said. “Mentally I’m going to go out there and see how my mind works. If I just don’t let anything interfere, I think I can do it.”
He’ll tee off Sunday at 1:35 p.m. with Clark. Singh is tied with Keith Mitchell and Kyoung-Hoon Lee. Rickie Fowler (five under) and Brooks Koepka (four under) are close behind.
