U.S. battles back to win Walker Cup after dominating Sunday singles performance
The U.S. Walker Cup team won big, and for the first time in 12 years it did so in an away matchup.
John Augenstein notched the clinching point and the Americans won eight of the 10 singles matches to beat Great Britain and Ireland 15.5-10.5 on Sunday at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, England.
The Americans trailed by two after Saturday’s opening round of four fourball matches and eight singles matches, but the U.S. trimmed that deficit to 8.5-7.5 after Sunday’s four fourballs matches. All that remained were 10 singles showdowns — and it turned into a lopsided afternoon.

The Americans’ most convincing victories came from Stewart Hagestad (5 and 3), Augenstein (4 and 3), Akshay Bhatia (4 and 2) and Cole Hammer (6 and 5).

“I honestly thought that these guys would let their talent come to the surface,” said U.S. captain Nathaniel Crosby. “I liked the idea that the wind was laying down a little bit this afternoon, but these guys have been over here for seven or eight days. The singles were amazing. The guys played great.”
The U.S. improved to 37-9-1 overall in the Walker Cup.
