Winner’s bag: Justin Thomas’ Titleist equipment at the BMW Championship

August 18, 2019

Justin Thomas vaulted to the top of the FedEx Cup standings with a decisive win at the BMW Championship in Chicago. The 10-time PGA Tour winner was clinical from tee-to-green, particularly with his Titleist irons and wedges. Thomas ranked second in strokes gained: approach-the-green with a setup consisting of Titleist’s T100 (4-iron), 718 MB (5-9) and Vokey Design Spin Milled (46 degrees, 52, 56 and 60 degrees).

Thomas replaced his 718 AP2 4-iron with the company’s new T100 — the replacement for AP2 — at the U.S. Open after noticing more consistency during testing. Much of Thomas’ new-found consistency with the club comes from dual-density tungsten positioned in the heel and toe of each head — 66 grams on average — that’s designed to enhance stability at impact.

Thomas also ranked seventh in strokes gained: putting with a Scotty Cameron X5 Flow Neck prototype putter that returned to the bag at the U.S. Open. With Patrick Cantlay applying pressure on the back nine on Sunday, the 26-year-old poured in a 14-footer for par on 12 to retain a three-shot lead and then backed it up with a birdie from 11 feet on 13.

The X5 mallet has been Thomas’ putter of choice since 2016 — he briefly tried a T-5.5 mallet and Newport 2 Timeless this season — when he made a trip to Cameron’s putter studio to analyze his stroke. After discussing the idea of designing a mallet that worked with his arcing stroke,  Cameron welded a flare neck to the head of a Futura X5 to achieve the necessary toe hang,

“It was a totally different look and that’s what I was going for,” Thomas said in 2018. “I was struggling and sometimes when you’re struggling you just need something different and new. I was like, let’s just go with it. What am I gonna do, miss more putts? I may as well try the mallet. It’s been great ever since then.”
