Webb Simpson’s runner-up finish landed him more money than the Wyndham Championship winner

Webb Simpson was in the final pairing of the Wyndham Championship on Sunday, but he fell off the pace after playing the first 13 in just one under and drifted well behind eventual winner J.T. Poston’s blistering pace.

Poston was five under on the front and signed for an eight-under 62 en route to his first PGA Tour victory. Simpson wasn’t threatening much all round, but he made a final surge that vaulted him to second place and handed him some extra cash.

At one under for the day with five to play, Simpson birdied four of the final five, which included a birdie on the par-4 18th finishing hole, to hand him a solo second-place finish. But that late jolt helped Simpson cash in with the Wyndham Rewards bonus, too.

New this year is the Wyndham Rewards Top 10, which hands out $10 million in bonus money at the end of the regular season. Brooks Koepka virtually locked up the $2 million top bonus last week, so he collected that check without even playing this week. Several others in the mix for the bonus money skipped the event, too, which allowed Simpson’s finish to vault him from 13th to 9th and take home a $550,000 bonus. That bumped Justin Rose out of the 10th spot, as the top eight remained unchanged. So, add Simpson’s bonus winnings to his $669,600 he received for second, and his total of $1,219,600 actually eclipsed the entire haul the winner, Poston, received ($1,116,000).

A solid day for Webb indeed, and it’s good for his second straight runner-up. He finished in the same spot at last week’s WGC-FedEx St. Jude.

“Honestly, [the bonus] wasn’t even on the radar going into Memphis,” Simpson said on Sunday. “I was too far back, I thought, unless I did something crazy. So yeah, it was on my mind this week.”
