Webb Simpson leads RSM Classic with first-round 65

The really big-name stars are somewhat sparse at this week’s RSM Classic, but a five-time Tour winner took advantage, with a statement-making round on Thursday on Georgia’s southeastern coast.

Here’s everything you missed from the first round in Sea Island.

An eight-birdie, one-bogey performance catapulted Webb Simpson to the top of the leaderboard, where he leads Cameron Tringale, Kyoung-Hoon Lee and Rhein Gibson by one shot.

Simpson is teeing it up on the PGA Tour for the first time since October, when he was T7 at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. He’s seeking his sixth career Tour victory.

As mentioned above, the big names are few and far between this week. But Patrick Rodgers had the second-best performance of the name-recognition set, with a four-under-par 68, followed Zach Johnson with a three-under-par 69, Jim Furyk with a one-under-par 71, Matt Kuchar with an even-par 72, and Jason Dufner, with a two-over-par 72.

Johnson Wagner made his third PGA Tour albatross (and the fourth of his professional career), on Thursday to tie Tim Petrovic’s record for the most on Tour since 1983, when the Tour began hole-by-hole scorekeeping.

Wagner dunked a 255-yard 3-wood on the Seaside course’s par-5 15th. He ended up signing for a three-under-par 67.
