WATCH: Rickie Fowler dunks wedge for eagle at Rocket Mortgage Classic

June 27, 2019

Rickie Fowler’s off to a strong start in the PGA Tour’s first-ever event in Detroit.

Playing the par-5 17th in the opening round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic on Thursday at Detroit Golf Club, Fowler pulled a wedge and dunked it from 122 yards for an eagle. It got him to three under on his round, and after a par on 18 he turned in 33. (He started on the back nine.)

You can check out Fowler’s shot below. He and others will need to go low this week, as the leaders are already hovering around five under on the day.

This is a big week for Fowler. Besides being one of the top draws — like he is most weeks — he’s also playing the part of informal tournament host. Rocket Mortgage is one of his sponsors, and he was the first big name to commit to the event.

“It’s special to be a part of a tournament and kind of, I guess, in a little bit of a host role,” he said on Wednesday. “It was something I always heard about over the last four, five years was the potential that the tournament would move to Detroit, a place where we haven’t had a Tour event in over 10 years and there’s not a whole lot of events that are played kind of in this area. It’s just been fun to see it all come together.”
