U.S. Open 2019: Tiger Woods sneaks in Sunday practice round at Pebble Beach

June 10, 2019

Tiger Woods got a jump start on his U.S. Open preparations on Sunday, getting in an early practice round at Pebble Beach. Woods was joined by caddie Joe LaCava and advisor Rob McNamara, and trekked the links in relative peace and quiet.

Woods wore a light-colored mock turtleneck and tested his game in a variety of ways, as shown in photos and videos posted by the USGA and USA Today’s Steve DiMeglio.

The extra session suggests a dialed-in Tiger Woods in the lead-up to the start of competition at Pebble. He also visited the course for a round the week before the Memorial, when he was joined by McNamara.

Woods’ Sunday arrival echoes his Masters prep, which also began on Sunday. By contrast, Woods was under the weather the week of the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black and played just nine holes on Monday, hit balls Tuesday and wasn’t feeling up to visiting the course on Wednesday.

Pebble Beach is, of course, the site of one of Woods’ most iconic victories, when he blitzed the field at the 2000 U.S. Open. He also won the pro-am Tour stop that year. Woods also finished T4 at Pebble’s last U.S. Open in 2010, but hasn’t played at Pebble Beach in a competitive round since 2012.

Woods tees off alongside Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose at 5:09 p.m. ET Thursday.
