U.S. Open 2019: Tiger Woods shoots 71 in third round at Pebble Beach
After grinding his way to a respectable 70 in the first round and suffering disappointing back-to-back bogeys on his closing holes en route to a second round of 72, it was hard to know what to expect from Tiger Woods in the third round of the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. Woods began the day nine shots behind leader Gary Woodland, so one thing was certain: he was going to need to go low to get himself back into contention.
But that didn’t happen. Woods had yet another up-and-down day where he failed to get any real momentum going, and he shot an even-par 71 to stay even for the tournament. Two bogeys in his first three holes effectively eliminated any chance he had of charging on Saturday.

He rebounded in typical Woods fashion, though, knocking his approach to just over four feet on No. 4 and draining the putt for birdie, and dropping another birdie putt on No. 5 from from 24 feet. He failed to birdie the par-5 6th, though, and a three-putt bogey on No. 7 stung.
He made the turn at one over par, and all was steady until he came up short on the par-3 12th and suffered yet another bogey. A 7-footer went down for birdie on No. 14, but he gave the shot back immediately after leaving himself a 12-foot putt for par on 15, which he missed.
The good news? Woods ended the round on a high note, draining a 27-footer for birdie on 16, and made yet another easy birdie with a short putt on the 18th to sign for a round of even-par 71. So although he didn’t gain any ground in the third round, he didn’t lose any either. When he finished he was T29.
