Tiger Woods hilariously uses third-person to pick himself for Presidents Cup team

November 8, 2019

There was great anticipation for whom Tiger Woods would add to his roster of Presidents Cup team members with four captain’s picks Thursday night. Woods delivered the first three confidently, and the final one in unexpected manner: third-person.

Woods chose Tony Finau, Patrick Reed and Gary Woodland as his first three picks, leaving just one more spot on the 12-man team. Finau is known for his consistency, Reed for his fiery nature and Woodland for breaking out at the U.S. Open this summer. The last pick, Tiger Woods himself, is known perhaps as being the greatest golfer of all-time. Oh, and one of the most recent winners on the PGA Tour.

“As captain, I’m going to choose Tiger Woods as the last player on the team,” Woods said during the Golf Channel broadcast. “He’s made, what, nine Cups? He’s played in Australia twice in the Presidents Cup. So this will be his third appearance there as a player. And uh, I find it interesting I’m talking in third-person.”

Woods let out a laugh. Laura Neal from the PGA Tour said what everyone was thinking: “Third-person Tiger is now my favorite Tiger.” And it wasn’t just her. International Team captains pick Adam Hadwin chimed in on Twitter, saying “Tiger talking about himself in 3rd person was amazing!”

Woods is making himself the first playing captain in a men’s team event since Hale Irwin did so in winning fashion back in 1994. Luckily for Woods, he definitely has the favorite squad, according to Vegas. Only one player on Woods’ team is ranked lower than the highest-ranked player from the International side. If Brooks Koepka is able to recovery from a knee injury, Woods’ team will include three major-winners from 2019.

But nothing will be guaranteed playing on the road. Royal Melbourne is a perfectly difficult course for the occasion, and also the host course for the only instance in which the International Team triumphed in the Presidents Cup, back in 1998. As a captain, Woods will be facing long-time South African rival Ernie Els, who made his own captain’s picks Wednesday.
