Justin Thomas reveals what his goals were last season — and what we can learn from them

October 4, 2018

Justin Thomas’s rise since turning professional has been meteoric, in every sense of the word.

Since turning professional in 2013 Thomas has won a major, shot 59, ascended to World No. 1, made the 2018 U.S. Ryder Cup team and won 10 more times worldwide along the way — all before his 26th birthday.

That doesn’t happen by accident. It takes hard work, dedication, and discipline. To help keep him on track, at the start of every season, JT sits down and sets a list of goals for the following year. On Thursday, he revealed what his 2017-18 season goals were on Instagram:

JT also asks that every member of his team sets their own goals for the following season so they can hold themselves “accountable.”

Every year/season my team and I come up with goals for the year… it’s something I’ve always found important. A few goals that are very attainable, some that are going to require some hard work, then some that are extremely difficult. I ask every person in my on course team (caddie, dad, putting coach), to make a their own list. This keeps us all accountable the entire year that everybody is doing what they should be doing on and off the course to make sure we are as ready as possible every time I tee it up. Time to get started on next years list! (And no I will not share it until the season is over ??) I challenge you guys to make your own list of goals and see how many you can achieve!

Challenge accepted, JT!

But before you run off to write down your own goals, take a moment to appreciate something Thomas said above: The varying degrees of difficulty in his goals. Some (like his goal of +.25 or better in SG Putting) should be fairly straightforward. Others (like his goal of winning a major) are far more difficult. Follow that same template. Set some goals that you’d be disappointed not to accomplish and others that will really push you. Good luck, and we’ll see you next year!
