Jordan Spieth withdraws from Sony Open with cold

January 5, 2020

For the first time in five years, Jordan Spieth’s season won’t include a stop in Hawaii. Spieth withdrew from next week’s Sony Open at Waialae Country Club, his manager telling Golf Channel via email that Spieth had been battling a cold and didn’t want it to get any worse with a lengthy flight from Dallas to Honolulu.

This was the second year in a row Spieth missed the Sentry Tournament of Champions after failing to win in the last two calendar years. He’s played in three events so far in the 2019-20 season, tying for 8th at The CJ Cup and failing to finish in the top 40 at the Zozo Championship and WGC-HSBC Champions. His most recent start was at the Hero World Challenge, where he finished 16th out of 18 in Tiger Woods’ unofficial event.

Spieth now plans to begin his 2020 calendar year at the Farmers Insurance Open on Jan. 23 at Torrey Pines. Spieth, 44th in the World Ranking, is still looking for his first victory since the 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

The Tour has yet to announce a replacement for Spieth at the Sony Open.
