Golf fans melt down over Bryson DeChambeau’s bizarre practice routine

September 18, 2018

Bryson DeChambeau. The artist. The mad scientist. The man some golf fans online love to hate, strikes again.

On Tuesday morning ahead of the season-ending Tour Championship, the PGA Tour’s Sean Martin shared a picture of the current FedEx Cup leader grinding on the range — complete with two(!) launch monitors, new golf balls, and a spray bottle to simulate conditions.

Golf fans, as you might expect, melted down over it.

So, what’s it all for?

Presumably Bryson’s trying to drill down some exact yardages on how far his clubs will travel this week, especially in certain conditions. But even still, it’s hard to know exactly what’s going through Bryson’s mind. Our best chance of understanding his mindset came in an answer he gave at The Northern Trust a few weeks ago:

Yeah, look, it’s half of what I do in my off-weeks. People don’t realize how hard I work to try and get a better understanding of my biomechanics. I’ve never really been super-talented; people would disagree with that, but I’ve always had to work twice as hard as everybody growing up.

So for whatever reason, that dedication has allowed me to be more consistent. When you come and look at this, it’s nothing different than what I would do at home. I’m just a little different cat. That’s okay. I like that and appreciate that about myself and that I’m able to stay true to myself. There’s a lot of people that change out here sometimes, and that’s something that I appreciate is that I’ve got a lot of great people around me that allow me to be consistent with who I am, and just keep working hard. That’s just who I am.

It’s just who he is. And it’s working.
