Gary Woodland’s putting coach crushes Twitter troll with devastating statistic

Gary Woodland stepped up to the 18th green on Sunday needing three putts to win the U.S. Open. He only took one.

With the birdie and a fist-pump, Woodland secured his first major championship — and his place as one of today’s top players.

The moment was emblematic of Woodland’s near-flawless week — especially in and around the greens. His +8.29 strokes gained putting was good for second in the field, a surprise given that he ranked 120th in strokes gained on the year. He didn’t have a single three-putt on the week, and credited his putting coach Phil Kenyon, among others, for preparing him for the pressure.

“(Coach) Pete (Cowan) has helped me, Phil Kenyon has helped me, put me in situations for the moment,” Woodland said after his round Sunday. “And fortunately I didn’t have a shot this week that I hadn’t practiced, and that’s pretty good.”

Kenyon used Woodland’s career-best performance to stick it to one detractor. All it took was two words, three emojis and one damning screenshot.

Hard to argue with facts.

Kenyon is among the golf world’s most renowned putting coaches, and his students, include Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson and Lee Westwood, among others. After Woodland’s U.S. Open triumph, you can add him to that group, as well.

As for Pat’s tweet from back in March, one would venture a guess that Woodland feels pretty good about his work with Kenyon right about now.
