Your first victory … in a FedEx Cup Playoff event? That’s exactly what Will Zalatoris could be headed for on Sunday in Memphis, as the 25-year-old star looks for his first PGA Tour win in one of the big tour’s biggest stages.
The first event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs has earned a tremendous amount of attention over the last few days for the looming courtroom battle between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, which threatened entrance for some of the upstart tour’s players into the PGA Tour’s biggest stage. The Tour won out, as a judge ruled that three LIV players — Talor Gooch, Matt Jones and Hudson Swafford — were unable to compete in the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
How Will Zalatoris overcame his self-described ‘rut’
On the course, though, things have been lively as ever. Through three rounds, J.J. Spaun leads the way at 13-under, but he’s trailed closely by a host of names, including Sepp Straka (-12), Trey Mullinax (-11) and potential LIV Golf defection Cameron Smith (-11).
Also trailing closely behind is Will Zalatoris (-11), who enters Sunday’s final round trailing by just two strokes and standing on the precipice of his first PGA Tour victory. Zalatoris, who has finished runner-up three times at majors already in his nascent career, will look to break through and grab a significant chunk of the FedEx St. Jude’s $15 million first prize.
