WATCH: Pros gaze at military flyover honoring D-Day Invasion at Canadian Open

Thursday, June 6, marked the 75th anniversary of the Allies’ D-Day Invasion of Normandy during World War II. People around the world commemorated the event, including the players and fans at the RBC Canadian Open, who were treated to a special military flyover at Hamilton Golf & Country Club.

During Thursday’s first round, the Canadian military performed a flyover at the tournament featuring seven World War II aircraft.

A video posted by the PGA Tour shows players like Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Webb Simpson, among others, admiring the planes as they each flew over the 10th tee and the clubhouse in 30-second increments.

Of the 150,000 Allied soldiers that landed or parachuted into Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944, 14,000 were Canadians. In addition, 15 fighter and bomber squadrons from the Royal Canadian Air Force helped fight the battle in the air during the invasion.

When the Battle of Normandy was finally over, and the region freed from Nazi rule, 5,000 Canadian soldiers had given their lives, while total Allied casualties exceeded 200,000.
