Sharma back? New record on the way? Three storylines defining the CIMB Classic

October 13, 2018

The year’s second event has completed 54 holes and it’s dead-locked between three players at 19 under. Yep, they’re taking it deep, led by Marc Leishman, Shubhankar Sharma and Gary Woodland. Here are three storylines you may have missed overnight.

New record on the way?

19 under through three rounds is low, but who will go lowest Sunday? The record score for this event is 26 under by Justin Thomas back in 2015, his first win as a professional. Will we see that record fall? It’ll require a Sunday 64 from Woodland, Leishman or Sharma, something each of them have already pulled off this week.

Sharma back?

Remember Shub? The young gun who won multiple times on the European Tour early in 2018? Well, he had a difficult summer, missing 11 cuts in 17 events, dropping back outside the top 100 in the world ranking. Shub has been consistent all week, shooting 67-64-66 to reach the 19 under mark he shares with Woodland and Leishman. Unlike those two, he’s yet to nab his first Tour win. It could come tomorrow.

Third time unlikely for JT

Justin Thomas notched his first two career wins at this event, but it isn’t likely he’ll tally another here this week. Thomas began with a smooth 66, but his back-to-back 69s just don’t seem to cut it at TPC Kuala Lumpur. Thomas will begin the final round seven shots back in a tie for 19th.
