The Charles Schwab Challenge winner at Colonial will go home with the coolest prize ever

May 22, 2019

The winner of this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club will not only walk away with $1.314 million and the event’s patented plaid jacket. He will also ride away in style — with a restored 1973 Dodge Challenger.

This might seem to be a random — if stylish — coup, but there’s a rationale for the prize. Charles Schwab has been “challenging the status quo” in its industry since 1973. The Colonial has “challenged” some of the world’s best golfers for 73 years. Hence, the event selecting a 1973 Dodge Challenger to reward its winner.

A loose connection, if still highly-coveted prize.

“As a brand that was founded on challenging the status quo for investors, we wanted to honor the spirit of the tournament with a one-of-a-kind award that represents the ‘challenger’ spirit of both the champion and our company,” said Andy Gill, executive vice president and chief marketing officer at Charles Schwab. “With this incredible prize and all of the other fan-friendly events and improvements we have planned, we look forward to bringing this challenger spirit to life.”

The car will be on display throughout this weekend’s tournament and will be awarded to the winner after its culmination. This is the first of a four-year sponsorship of the event at Colonial for Charles Schwab.

This year’s field features a host of some of golf’s best, including Jordan Spieth, who will be playing just 30 miles from his hometown of Dallas and is coming off his best performance of the season. Justin Rose, who won at Colonial last year, stands as the odds-on favorite at 10/1, according to GolfOdds.com. Spieth (12/1), John Rahm (12/1), Rickie Fowler (12/1), Xander Schauffele (16/1), and Francesco Molinari (16/1) trail closely behind.
