The PGA Tour is returning to the Baltimore area for the first time in 60 years

February 12, 2020

A golfer could have been born, played on the PGA tour and been a veteran on the senior circuit since the last time the PGA Tour swung through the Baltimore area.

But Charm City can finally dust off its golf bag, according to reports.

Caves Valley Golf Club, in Owings Mills, Md., will host next year’s BMW Championship, the Chicago Tribune and Baltimore Sun reported Wednesday, marking the PGA Tour’s first stop in the Baltimore area in nearly 60 years. An official announcement is expected on Thursday morning.

The tournament, a FedEx Cup playoff event and the final stop before the season-ending Tour Championship, has been held in the Chicago area every other year since 2011. The Chicago Tribune reported that the Western Golf Association, which conducts the event, wants to both grow the BMW Championship’s national presence and boost donations to the Evans Scholars Foundation, which receives all proceeds from the tournament.

Maryland’s version of the tournament will be played Aug. 17-21, 2021, the first PGA Tour event in the Baltimore area since the 1962 Eastern Open Invitational at Mt. Pleasant Golf Club, won by Doug Ford. The 2020 tournament will be played at Olympia Fields Country Club on Aug. 20-23, and the event’s defending champion is Justin Thomas.

Caves Valley, a Tom Fazio design that opened in 1991, is not completely unfamiliar with bigger events, as it has hosted USGA championships, men’s and women’s NCAA championships, the 2002 U.S. Senior Open, the 2007 Palmer Cup, the LPGA’s 2014 International Crown and the 2017 Senior Players Championship.
