Your 30-second guide to Day 2 at the Ryder Cup: Scores, heroes, and disappointments

September 29, 2018

SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France — Here’s everything you need to know from Saturday at the Ryder Cup:

The score: Europe had its second consecutive 5-3 day and leads 10-6 going to the final round.

How it got there: Europe dominated the morning fourballs, 3-1, and the U.S. barely squeaked out a point. It was a 2-2 split in the afternoon. There were plenty of blowouts; no matches saw the 18th hole all day.

Why it matters: The table has been set for a European victory, as the home crowd holds a four-point advantage heading to Sunday. Teams don’t tend to come back on the road from this far down. But there was one time the U.S. rallied at home…

How to watch Sunday:

Heroes: Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari just capped off an historic 4-0 stretch, including three wins over Tiger Woods. That’s a hell of an effort.

Disappointments: The U.S. captain’s picks have combined for one single point. One point! They’re a combined 1-7 in their matches. The rest of the point totals are here:

Best celebration: That would belong to Rory McIlroy, who scream-trash-talked a spectator as his putt at No. 3 in the afternoon dropped. Only problem? McIlroy and partner Ian Poulter lost 4&3.

Greatest hole: That’s greatest as in largest number of strokes taken. Simpson/Watson and Garcia/Noren halved the par-3 2nd hole with triple bogeys after making a full-on mess in the afternoon. There was only one score worse than par from the six other players to go through the hole.

Best rematch: That belongs to McIlroy and Tony Finau, who tangled in the morning. McIlroy and Sergio Garcia got the better of Finau this time, but the better part of two decades ago, the two played together when they looked like this:
