Tiger Woods WDs from Northern Trust Open after first round

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the Northern Trust Open with an oblique strain, according to the PGA Tour.

Woods released a statement via the PGA Tour that he had withdrawn due to a “mild oblique strain that led to pain and stiffness.”

“I went for treatment early Friday morning, but unfortunately I’m still unable to compete. I’d like to thank the New Jersey and New York fans for their support and remain hopeful I can compete next week at the BMW Championship.”

Woods posted an opening round of 4-over 75 at Liberty National Golf Club on Thursday.

During Wednesday’s pro-am, Woods showed signs of stiffness and stopped making full swings after the first seven holes.

“I learned a lot last year by playing too much,” Woods said at the time. “Coming back from my procedure and not really knowing what to expect, I pushed it pretty hard. Vowed I would never do that again.”

For Woods, the WD is his first since the 2017 Omega Desert Dubai Classic and first on the PGA Tour since the 2015 Farmers Insurance Open. Woods also had committed to the 2019 Arnold Palmer Invitational before pulling out before the event began — though he won his next start at the Masters.

Woods is projected to slip outside the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings, meaning he would need a solid result at next week’s BMW Championship to have a chance to return to East Lake for the following week’s Tour Championship.
