Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy headline star-studded skins game coming in October

September 19, 2019

News first surfaced of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy headlining a skins-game reboot back in July, and now we have all the juicy details of the event coming to Japan next month.

The PGA Tour announced on Wednesday night that Woods, McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama and Jason Day will face off in a high-stakes skins matchup to kick off ZOZO Championship week. The televised skins game will be broadcast at 11 p.m. ET on Golf Channel on Oct. 20.

Dubbed “The Challenge: Japan Skins,” the event is supposed to be the first of a series of annual skins-game challenges held globally, and Woods will likely be a key figure in most, if not all of them.

The October showdown will take place at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Chiba, Japan, which will also host the ZOZO Championship Oct. 24-27. The ZOZO is new to the Tour schedule and will be the first official PGA Tour event held in Japan (Woods has already committed to).

According to the release, the skins game between Woods, McIlroy, Day and Matsuyama — all superstars in their respective countries — will feature in-match challenges and surprises and will finish under floodlights. Each hole will be worth an increasing monetary value.

“I haven’t played a skins format in quite some time, so it will be fun to try something a little different and add a few strategic elements as we compete,” Woods said in the release. “There has already been some friendly banter between us and that will continue until we get to the first tee.”

The event is presented by Golf TV powered by the PGA Tour (Woods has a deal with Golf TV), and viewers in select countries will have to purchase a monthly Golf TV pass in order to watch the action.
