This video of Tiger Woods puring range shots is absolutely mesmerizing

January 23, 2020

The sight of Tiger Woods hitting a golf ball has long mesmerized golfers of all stripes. Not just the sight, though, the sound as well.

As anyone who has spent time at a PGA Tour event will tell you, there’s a massive visual and audible difference between the shots of the world’s best golfers as compared to even the best scratch at your local club. When it comes to Tiger, the difference is even more staggering.

But no one has seen (or heard) as many pured Tiger Woods shots in such a short time as in a video posted of Woods working through his bag on the range at Torrey Pines on Wednesday. And it’s a thing of beauty.

In the video shared by the PGA Tour, the camera zeroes in on Woods’ clubs as he grinds through a range session, with the footage edited to show only the moments of impact. The result is downright enthralling, seeing the best golfer in the world make pure contact and a perfect divot on shot after shot after shot, with the impact sounds adding a hypnotic effect.

In all, Woods hits 56 shots (by our count!), beginning with his wedges and running up through the driver. One of the coolest things about the video is how the sound of impact changes as the loft on Woods’ clubs change and as his swing speeds up with the longer clubs.

Based on a rough inspection of the video, Woods hits 10 shots with his wedges, 40 shots with his longer irons, and six teed-up shots with what is presumably his driver, either his old TaylorMade M5 or a new TaylorMade SIM he’s been testing recently (the clubhead speeds in the video are too fast to determine which).

Check it out for yourself below.

It’s impossible to tell what shape Tiger’s game is in based off one range session, but it’s easy to see his skills are worlds beyond anything you’ll see at the range in your town.

We’ll get the first peek at Tiger’s real game in the heat of competition when he makes his 2020 debut at the Farmers Insurance Open on Thursday. Woods tees off at 1:40 p.m. ET on Thursday alongside Collin Morikawa and Jon Rahm.
