Tiger Woods closes week at Pebble Beach with lowest final-round U.S. Open score in 10 years

June 16, 2019

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — It was a tale of two nines for Tiger Woods as he finished the 119th U.S. Open on Sunday at Pebble Beach.

Woods stumbled out of the gate and bogeyed four of the first six but closed his round with six birdies en route to a two-under 69, his lowest final round at a U.S. Open since 2009.

After rounds of 70, 72, 71 and 69, Woods finished two under for the week and was tied for 20th when he tapped in on 18.

The 15-time major champion made bogeys on 1, 2, 5 and 6 to jump to four over on his round early, but he rebounded with back-to-back birdies on 7 and 8 and turned in two-over 37. Then he got hot. Woods’s back nine was his best of the week. He was bogey-free and made birdies on 13, 14, 16 and 18 to shoot four-under 32. Woods’ birdie on 13 was from over 40 feet.

Woods’s next start is still unknown, although he’ll most certainly be in the field at the Open Championship in Portrush, Northern Ireland, next month.

Gary Woodland, the 54-hole leader, is trying to hold off Brooks Koepka, Justin Rose and others on Sunday at Pebble Beach. You can follow the final round here.
