Tiger Woods cards five-under 67 in final round of Memorial Tournament

Tiger Woods might not have won the Memorial Tournament — which he’s done five times before — but his performance on Sunday at Muirfield Village was a fine statement and tune-up before the third major of the golf season. Woods shot a five-under 67 and tied for 9th at nine-under overall. He was 10 back of winner Patrick Cantlay (19 under).

Rocking his iconic Sunday red and black, Woods racked up five birdies over the first eight holes on Sunday in Dublin, Ohio, which started with back-to-back birdies at the 2nd and 3rd. That moved him to two-under on the day and six-under for the tournament.

Woods continued his Sunday charge with a third birdie at the par-5 5th, which moved him to three under on the day.

He then went birdie-birdie at the 7th and 8th holes to make the turn in five under for the round and was tied for sixth and six shots back of leader Martin Kaymer.

Woods notched two more birdies at the 11th and 12th holes to move to seven under on the day and 11 under for the tournament. Suddenly with six holes to play and seven birdies on the day so far, Woods moved into a tie for fourth.

But after a par at the 13th hole, Woods’ hot streak was brought to a halt with a bogey at the 14th. It was his first of the round and second in as many days at the 14th. It dropped the 15-time major champion back to six under on the day and seven off the lead. A bogey at the 18th — he also made bogey there on Saturday — brought his final round to a close on a sour note.

Woods’ next appearance on Tour will come in two weeks at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach as he chases his first U.S. Open win since 2008 and fourth U.S. Open title overall. He’ll also be looking for major win No. 16 after his win at the Masters this past April.

Fortunately for Woods, the U.S. Open comes to a course he knows well. He won both the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach in 2000.
