Tiger vs. Phil purse, side bets for “The Match”

November 19, 2018

It’s finally time for “The Match” between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson this Friday at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas. One of the most highly-anticipated aspects of the showdown is the humongous purse that is on the line.

“The Match” will be winner-take-all, so the entire purse will be going to the winner. The loser won’t be going home with any portion of the purse.

As for the purse, it’s been set at $9 million. The winner-take-all stakes for the $9 million purse definitely raises the stakes for “The Match.”

“It’s a ridiculous amount of money,” Mickelson told GOLF’s Alan Shipnuck. “No matter how much money you have, this amount will take both of us out of our comfort zone.”

The winner of “The Match” will be taking home a big payday.

When Tiger initially tweeted about “The Match” in August, Phil replied saying “I bet you think this is the easiest $9M you will ever make.”

But another intriguing part of the showdown that is not included in the official purse are side bets. Fans first found out about the potential side bets last month when Phil teased the idea during an interview with TNT on one of their NBA games.

“We’re going to have little challenges that can maybe get in each other’s heads,” Mickelson said. “You have a downhill putt? I’ll bet you 50Gs that you miss it.”

Nothing quite like casually dropping $50,000 on a putt or tee shot.

“As previously announced, the winner of this blockbuster, winner-take-all showdown between two golf legends will walk away with $9 million,” Turner Sports said in a statement last month. “During the live event competition, both Woods and Mickelson will selectively make side challenges against one another.  For instance, Woods or Mickelson could raise the stakes by challenging the other to a long-drive, closest-to-the-pin or similar competition during a hole as they play their match, with money being donated to the winning golfer’s charity of choice.”

However, not every single dollar for “The Match” will be going into the pockets of Tiger or Phil. In fact, the two golfers have said that they plan to donate a portion of the proceeds to charities of their choice.
