Tiger Woods and Charlie Woods? They’re 530 yards apart.
Vijay Singh and Qass Singh? They’re next to each other.
Bernhard Langer and Jason Langer? They’re 540 yards apart — though Jason, the non-pro, is playing from a longer distance than Bernhard, the two-time Masters winner.
The reasons for the discrepancies — or in the case of the Singhs, the similarity? It’s due to the event they’re playing in this week, the PNC Championship, the (mostly) friendly pro-relative scramble event that wraps up the golf year. On the non-pro side, you have sons, grandsons, a daughter and a dad, while among the pros, the ages vary, from 44 (Trevor Immelman) to 88 (Gary Player) — so to try to keep things fair, four sets of tees are in play.
For seven of the teams (Teams Cink, Duval, Immelman, Kuchar, Leonard, Harrington and Woods), the pro — and the pro alone — plays from the max yardage (7,106 yards). Five of the pros (Singh, John Daly, Steve Stricker, Nelly Korda and Fred Couples), meanwhile, play from the second set of tees (6,576 yards), and here’s where pros and non-pros start to overlap — also playing from this distance are 17 non-pros.
The third set of tees (6,036 yards) sees six pros (Langer, Nick Faldo, Tom Lehman, Mark O’Meara, Nick Price and Annika Sorenstam), and all but Sorenstam are playing from a distance shorter than their relative. (Sorenstam and son Will McGee are playing at the same distance.) Is that a bit funky? Perhaps. But again, it’s a family event; a Masters invite isn’t on the line. The last tee box (5,484 yards), meanwhile, is reserved for the field’s two oldest pros — Gary Player (age 88) and Lee Trevino (84).
Do the participants monitor the qualifications for the tee boxes? You bet — especially when the pros age-up and move closer.
“It’s a sought-after week now. Everybody wants to play,” Padraig Harrington said Saturday. “There’s guys disappointed. I know from my perspective, my two sons are trying to divvy up when they are going to play, who is going to play. They are both very keen for when I get to 55 because I go up a tee box.”
Below is the complete tee-box and yardage breakdown.
