The Open 2019: Tiger Woods pokes fun at rough day with over-the-top birdie celebration

July 18, 2019

Tiger Woods had a rough first round during The Open Championship at Royal Portrush. So when the three-time Open champion finally drained his first birdie of the day at the par-4 15th hole, he had to let out a celebration.

The 15-time major champion came to the 15th hole at seven over through 14 holes. After starting the day even through four, the 43-year-old was five over on his last five of the front nine to make the turn in 41. Woods’ struggles continued on the back nine with bogeys at the 10th and 14th.

But earning his first red number of the day at the 15th, Woods let out his frustration with an extended celebration. He first extended his arms to the crowd to show how relieved he was to have finally made a birdie, followed by an emphatic tally lick with his finger. Here’s the celebration.

Woods parred the next two before a bogey on 18 led to a seven-over 78. Unless he’s able to post a real low score during Friday’s second round, there’s a good chance he won’t be making it to the weekend.
