Ted Scott knows a thing or two about looping for the world’s best players. Scott was on the bag for both of Bubba Watson’s Masters victories, and he’s already won two more with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, whom Scott has teamed up with to win 19 times on Tour since they joined forces in the fall of 2021.
In January, we visited Scott in his native Louisiana to talk about his journey in life and caddying, but we also picked up some tips along the way — like his five secrets to become a good caddie. You can check them out below.

Ted Scott’s 5 keys to be a good caddie
1. “Make sure you keep your player driving the car — wash his underwear, pick up his laundry, pick up supplies, do whatever you have to do to lower his burden so he can keep his eyes on the prize.”
2. “Get around better caddies, coaches and players. Get around the better people. That’s how you become better at caddying.”
3. “Forget what happened on the last hole. Misread a putt? He’s going to ask you to read the next one and you got to be confident. It’s better to be consistently wrong and learn from it than to be all over the map. It’s hard to learn when you’re changing your theory constantly, so being forgetful — as a caddie or a player — is a huge thing.”
4. “This is probably the most difficult one, but don’t take it personally. To be a great caddie is to absorb negative behavior that’s directed at you but not meant for you. These guys are under tremendous stress, and they’ll say or mention ugly things to you. It’s easy to take it personal, but don’t — you’re just the closest warm body.”
5. “This one’s the most important one: find a great player. What makes a great caddie? A great player. Write that down, kids.”
