Watch Suzann Pettersen make one of the most clutch birdies in golf history

Suzann Pettersen caught a lot of heat heading into the 2019 Solheim Cup. Europe’s final Captain’s Pick, there were questions over whether she still deserved a spot on the team. Battling an injury and becoming a mother in the last few years, many questioned whether her best days in the Solheim Cup were behind her.

She proved all her critics wrong on Sunday.

At one point, the Solheim Cup looking like a forgone conclusion for the U.S. late on Sunday evening. Then, within half an hour, everything changed. The tournament all came down to the final match on the course, Marina Alex and — of course — Suzann Pettersen.

Alex had a putt to retain the cup on the 17th hole that slid just by. Then, on 18, hitting her third shot from about 80 yards, Pettersen almost dropped her wedge shot for an eagle.

Marina still had a putt to win it — but it slid by. Setting the stage for Pettersen, who seized the moment with both hands.

It was the perfect end to one of the most remarkable contests in history and, perhaps, a career. In the European team’s victory press conference, Pettersen officially retired from the Solheim Cup and heavily suggested her competitive golf career was over, too. If it turns out to be true, there’s no better way to end it.

“I think this is the end, for at least my Solheim career and a nice end for a professional career it doesn’t get any better.”
