Suite of the Week: The Presidential Suites at The Wigwam

December 10, 2015

Where: Litchfield Park (Phoenix), Arizona

What it costs: $1,200-$2,700 per night

What’s inside: Measuring a palatial 5,000 square feet, the Oraibi Suite is one of two Presidential Suites at The Wigwam, the other being the 3,500-square-foot Bacabi Suite. The Oraibi Suite is ideal for a buddies trip or for families, with three bedrooms, two with king beds, one with two queens. Each room offers a pull-out sofa bed and there are two sofa beds in the parlor — as well as two murphy beds. The butler pantry area features a three-burner stove, oven, apartment-size refrigerator, microwave and formica white countertops. Other highlights include a bar area with stools and a living room complete with fireplace, television, and maybe best of all for buddies, a pool table. The Bacabi is lacking a pool table, but does have a stainless steel full-size fridge, granite countertops, silverware, plates and glassware and ceramic tile in the bathrooms. With three full bathrooms and a powder room, plus a host of handsome, brand new appointments, both the Oraibi Suite and the slightly smaller, slightly less expensive Bacabi Suite are ideal for those who require extra elbow room.

What else you get: One of Arizona’s oldest luxury resorts dates to 1929 and its eye-catching, historic adobe-and-timber lobby building holds a gallery of Southwestern lore. The resort is also home to an acclaimed Red Door Spa, palm-shaded lawns, four distinctive pools and a tournament-ready tennis facility. Interconnected paths lead guests from lobby to casitas, alongside flower gardens and citrus trees and ultimately to the 54-hole golf complex comprised of the Gold, the Patriot and the Heritage courses. Long ranked among the Top 100 Courses in the U.S., the Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed Gold reopened in November following a Tom Lehman makeover that instilled more variety, strategy and playability while retaining the original spirit of the Jones masterpiece. Within minutes are Cactus League spring training baseball parks, Phoenix International Raceway for NASCAR and Indy Car action and Luke Air Force Base, where our nation’s F-16 and F-35 pilots train.

For other budgets: Guest rooms at the hotel start at $129 per night (summer) and $359 per night in the high season of winter.
