Report: Steve Stricker to captain 2020 Ryder Cup team at Whistling Straits

February 18, 2019

The 2020 U.S. Ryder Cup team seems to have its captain booked. According to a report from Wisconsin.Golf writer Gary D’Amato, native Wisconsinite Steve Stricker will be the lead man at Whistling Straits next year and will be introduced as such in Milwaukee Wednesday.

Stricker has long been a favorite for the position as he was born in Wisconsin, currently lives in Madison, has previously served as a vice captain at the Ryder Cup and captained the victorious Presidents Cup team in 2017. Just last week, he was also announced as a vice captain under Tiger Woods for this year’s Presidents Cup in Australia.

According to the report, Stricker will be officially announced Wednesday morning during a press conference at 8 a.m. ET. As D’Amato notes, Stricker will be the first American captain who has never won a major championship. He does have plenty of playing experience, competing for three teams, winning in 2008. Oddly enough, Wikipedia lists his nickname as “Mr. September.”

The PGA of America has not immediately responded to a request for comment.

Stricker will reportedly lead the Americans in his home state of Wisconsin.

Stricker was an original member of the United States Ryder Cup Task Force team that was assembled in response to a third-straight European victory in 2014. He continues to play a very active schedule on the PGA Tour, but at the age of 51, has spent plenty of time on the Champions Tour of late.

Standing across from Stricker as the European Captain will be Irishman Padraig Harrington, who notably thinks Whistling Straits will set up in favor of his to-be-determined roster. The 2020 Ryder Cup is just 19 months away. You can find the full report from D’Amato here.
