Rory McIlroy falls short in playoff at Omega European Masters
Just one week after his lucrative victory at the Tour Championship, Rory McIlroy rallied on the back nine on at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland, carding three birdies on his final five holes to get into a five-man playoff for the title.
McIlroy, Andres Romero, Kalle Samooja, Lorenzo Gagli and Sebastian Soderberg all reached 14 under par overall after four rounds, and headed to the par-4 18th for a sudden-death playoff. Gagli bogeyed, McIlroy, Romero and Samooja parred, and Soderberg birdied to claim the trophy — his maiden European Tour victory.
For McIlroy, the T2 finish is yet another example of his stellar form this year. In addition to winning the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup, he won the Players Championship and the RBC Canadian Open. He also had an incredible 14 total top 10 finishes on the PGA Tour in 19 events.
McIlroy is currently No. 2 in the world ranking — right behind Brooks Koepka.
Other notable finishes at the Omega European Masters include Tommy Fleetwood (T8), Sergio Garcia (T23), Lee Westwood (T28), Troy Merritt (T35), Eddie Pepperell (T35), Rory Sabbatini (T63) and Matthew Fitzpatrick (T69).
