The final round of the Players Championship is set to tee off on Sunday, as Jon Rahm holds a one-shot lead at 15-under after 54 holes at TPC Sawgrass. Of course, one of the big upgrades to the Players Championship this year was via its purse. The event’s prize money is now a record-setting $12.5 million, which is the largest ever for a single professional golf tournament.
Earlier this year, the PGA Tour announced that the Players Championship purse would be increased by 13.6 percent from $11 million to $12.5 million. As a result, the winner will be taking home $2.25 million for coming out on top at the Stadium Course. Last year’s champion, Webb Simpson, took home $1.98 million for winning at TPC Sawgrass.
The runner-up is expected to take home $1.35 million, while the third-place finisher will walk away with $850,000.
