Report: 2020 Players Championship purse gets huge increase, greater winner’s payout

The 2020 Players Championship was called off after Thursday's first round.

The winner of the 2020 Players Championship will get paid handsomely.

According to the Associated Press, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan announced a huge increase to the purse of the PGA Tour’s flagship event during the annual players meeting held this week at Torrey Pines. The total purse will reportedly increase to $15 million and the winner will take home $2.7 million.

The $2.7 million payday would be the highest winner’s payout on the PGA Tour. (Not counting FedEx Cup bonus money handed out after the Tour Championship.)

Rory McIlroy earned $2.25 million for winning the 2019 Players, which had a total purse of $12.5 million. The U.S. Open also had a $12.5 million purse in 2019. Last year, the Masters purse was $11.5 million, the PGA Championship purse was $11 million and the Open Championship purse was $10.75 million.

While the Players purse and winner’s payout has reportedly increased, it’s likely golf’s four majors will increase as well. But that information has yet to be announced.

“It’s our flagship event,” Xander Schauffele told the AP. “It needs to counterbalance the major championships, and it’s putting a nice incentive out there. I’m not upset by it.”

The Players is March 12-15 at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
