WATCH: Phil Mickelson hits insane recovery shot from cart path

October 5, 2019

Normally it’s Phil Mickelson’s wicked short game that blows us away. This week, Mickelson’s phenomenal shot came nowhere near the green. In fact, it came from some gravel.

As he is wont to do, Mickelson missed left with his tee shot on the 2nd hole at TPC Summerlin. He went so far left that his ball sat in a patch of gravel just left of the cart path. Mickelson would be entitled to relief from the path, but he apparently didn’t want it.

With a tree between his ball and the green, relief would have placed Lefty in the rough, and hitting a sweeping cut from that lie would be much more difficult. Perhaps impossible. Instead, Mickelson stood his ground, feet on the path, and struck a low, cutting shot out over the fairway, bounding toward the green.

John Swantek was on the call for PGA Tour Live, and his words are all you really need. “That is a sensational recovery shot,” Swantek said. Yes it was.

Mickelson’s shot rolled out just to the edge of the green and finished 21 feet from the hole. He’d miss his birdie try, but had an easy tap-in for par. The 49-year-old finished his round with a two-under 69, just four shots back of the lead after 36 holes.
