PGA Tour explains pro’s withdrawal — after he shoots 13-over over 6 holes 

Dylan Frittelli hit one of the day’s best shots. 

Then some of the worst. 

Then he was gone — with the explanation as to why just 17 words long. 

Let’s go in order. On Muirfield Village Golf Club’s par-4 6th, among a patch of trees to the right of the fairway and with water and a bunker guarding the flag 181 yards away, Frittelli snuck his second shot to 6 feet. He birdied. On a day when the Memorial Tournament’s first round tested everyone — defending champ Billy Horschel, for example, shot an 12-over 84 — Frittelli played his first six holes on Thursday at a respectable one-over.   

And from there?

He bogeyed the par-5 7th. 

After a par at the par-3 8th, he double-bogeyed the par-9th. 

He triple-bogeyed the par-4 10th and par-5 11th. 

He double-bogeyed the par-3 12th, bogeyed the par-4 13th and double-bogeyed the par-4 14th. On the par-5 15th, Frittelli hit his tee shot 214 yards and well left. 

And then he was done. He withdrew. Frittelli had played holes nine through 14 at 13-over — with five penalty strokes — but he played no more. 

A short while later, the PGA Tour Communications Twitter account shared the news, with this reasoning:

“Dylan Frittelli WD during the first round of the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday due to illness.”

The WD continues a tough stretch for Frittelli. Starting with the Players Championship in mid-March, he has missed seven cuts in 10 events and withdrawn twice — this week, and at the RBC Heritage in April after shooting a first-round 80.
