PGA Tour Fantasy Golf is getting a refresh for the new year.
As part of the Tour’s continuing efforts to update and modernize its entertainment offerings, the Tour released a series of updates to its Fantasy Golf game for the 2025 season.
The new PGA Tour Fantasy incorporates a series of rule and feature changes aimed at improving the fantasy product, which carries a small but loyal following among golf diehards. The biggest shift will be the creation of a new “team captain” feature, which players will assign each week to earn double points for their roster — a change that aims to provide more differentiation between lineups. The Tour also released a brand-new automatic swap feature — popular in other fantasy apps — that will automatically toggle in new players should a rostered selection miss the cut at an event.
As part of the tweaks, the Tour also rolled out a series of updates to its website and app to allow for better overlap with the fantasy game. The biggest of those changes — a new real-time scoreboard — will allow fans to follow the action as it’s happening, rather than waiting for Monday morning to see their results.
Under the new format, winners of the Tour’s quarterly and season-long competitions will receive gift cards to the PGA Tour Superstore, with the Tour’s retail outfitter coming in as the Fantasy game’s presenting sponsor.
“PGA Tour Fantasy Golf stays true to what fans have loved about the previous version, but with fresh components that will no doubt bring an elevated experience for both new users and longtime fans,” Scott Warfield, the Tour’s VP of gaming, said in a statement announcing the updates. “We’re excited to have PGA Tour Superstore as our partner in this new Fantasy endeavor, and we look forward to fans being able to align more closely with the reimagined Tour schedule, beginning with the Opening Drive in Hawaii.”
The Tour’s changes mark the latest efforts to build upon the explosion of fantasy sports over the last two decades, and more specifically the growth of niche fantasy offerings over the last several years. While “traditional” fantasy sports like baseball and football have attracted broad appeal, so-called “alternate formats” like Guillotine leagues have attracted cult followings. The success of those offerings has led to a proliferation of updates to fantasy leagues across the sports world, which helped to spur some of the latest round of golf-related changes.
The new PGA Tour Fantasy league comes at a time of upheaval for the Tour, which has undergone a series of structural changes to its regular competitive format in just the last few years. The biggest of those changes, a new equity investor class that has purchased a minority stake in the Tour business, enters the golf world with aspirations of making golf more entertaining and accessible to regular sports fans.
The first of those efforts is already underway, but there’s more on the horizon. For Fantasy players, the new order begins on January 1.
