Matt Borchert thought he came up short. He was happy to be wrong.
Bochert, the pro at Isleworth Golf & Country Club, thought he shot 69 to close the 36-hole PGA Tournament Series event on Tuesday, falling one stroke short of a playoff. That’s when his competitor, Bob Sowards, corrected him and said they both shot 68 and were tied.
Borchert went back to his scoreboard and noticed the mistake, and then, about 10 minutes later, beat Sowards on the first playoff hole to win at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Borchert made a 20-footer for birdie to win the fourth event of the PGA Tournament Series, the first of his career.
“It was too long of a day on the golf course,” Borchert told PGA.com, referring to his scoring error. “I was trying to figure out where I stood on 18.”
Sowards is the PGA Professional at Kinsale Golf & Fitness Club in Powell, Ohio.
“I played great today,” Sowards said. “He just wouldn’t go away. Best putter I think I’ve ever seen.”
Borchert called the win one of the biggest of his career.
“I was always the guy, ‘Man you’re playing solid,’” he said. “It’s always nice to win something.”
