We’ve got an electric major championship on the way and now, we know a little more about how things will look at Quail Hollow, because the PGA Championship’s first- and second-round tee times are out. If that’s all you want, they’re all at the bottom of this post. But while I have you, let’s buzz through what caught my eye as the 10 most interesting trios:
10. Sergio Garcia / Daniel Berger / Russell Henley – No. 1 tee, 1:58 p.m.
Daniel Berger has been racking up top 20s this season but remains something of a mysterious figure since his comeback. Sergio Garcia has a few poor starts in a row but dreams of a way onto this year’s Ryder Cup team. And Russell Henley, while always underrated, is this year’s winner at Bay Hill and a top-10 player in the world.
9. Max Homa / Joaquin Niemann / Lucas Glover – No. 1, 12:52 p.m.
This week finds Max Homa at an interesting crossroads; he’s had a run of disappointing results and he’s changed coachies, caddies, clubs and golf swings since last season. But he also showed nicely at the Masters, played well for most of last week’s Truist, he says he’s feeling better and, intriguingly, he’s a past winner here.
And Joaquin Niemann has something to prove; based off his worldwide play he’s one of the best golfers in the world but based off his major championship results he’s not. What gives?
8. Phil Mickelson / Jason Day / Tommy Fleetwood – No. 10, 7:49 a.m.
The guy who won it four years ago in one of the most ridiculous moments in golf history, the guy who outdueled peak Jordan Spieth to win it 10 years ago and the guy who needs a major win and comes in playing excellent golf.
7. Jon Rahm / Patrick Cantlay / Matt Fitzpatrick, No. 10, 8:00 a.m.
Jon Rahm has more to prove than anyone this week. Patrick Cantlay has been playing better than you’d think. And while there’s not much Matt Fitzpatrick has been feeling optimistic about, he enters off a top 25, at least.
Rickie Fowler parked next to three-time PGA champ Brooks Koepka, plus in-form, chip-on-his shoulder Shane Lowry coming off a near-miss but also a bundle of top 20s in a row? Yes, please.
The world is full of coincidences but I don’t believe this is one of ’em: the American Ryder Cup captain is grouped alongside two under-the-radar potential picks for Bethpage, who currently sit at Nos. 7 and 8 on the U.S. list, while playing an event run by the same organization as the Ryder Cup. What effect will that have on their play? I have no idea. But it’s an intriguing combo.
4. Justin Thomas / Collin Morikawa / Dustin Johnson – No. 1, 1:14 p.m.
Justin Thomas has won this event twice, he’s won here and he’s finished first or second in three of his last four starts. Collin Morikawa has had an uneven few weeks but remains among the best players in the world. And Dustin Johnson showed signs of life in Mexico a few weeks ago, even if he’s missed four major cuts since his last major top 30. Add in the fact that Morikawa/Johnson was a formidable Ryder Cup duo and Thomas’ temporary (and winning) caddie of last month is now working for Morikawa and you’ve got plenty of games within the game to keep track of.
3. Jordan Spieth / Patrick Reed / Ludvig Åberg – No. 1, 1:25 p.m.
Did you say Jordan Spieth, who is chasing the career Grand Slam, is playing alongside longtime partner-but-it’s-complicated Ryder Cup teammate Patrick Reed? And that their third is electric Tour sophomore Ludvig Åberg, who has a second, a seventh and a T12 in five career majors? I’m in.
2. No. 1, 1:47 p.m. – Bryson DeChambeau / Viktor Hovland / Gary Woodland
Bryson DeChambeau is box office, he was built for this golf course, he won last year’s U.S. Open, he won last week’s LIV event, he was in solid position to win last month’s Masters and he is a massive, massive star. Viktor Hovland is somehow both the guy who declared his golf game dead and hopeless and the guy who won the Valspar less than two months ago. Add in Gary Woodland, a man on the comeback trail who should vibe quite well with Quail Hollow, and you’ve got a terrific trio. The most intriguing trio, in fact, other than…
First, a side-note: Do I like that the tournament has put Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in the world in the same group? No, I do not. I think it’s a very bad idea that has gotten normalized by other tournaments and has also now gotten overdone. I didn’t like it when the U.S. Open did it with Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott at the 2008 U.S. Open, but at least that was a one-off. Guess who played together on Thursday and Friday at last year’s Masters? And on Thursday and Friday at last year’s U.S. Open? And on Thursday and Friday at this year’s Players? Scheffler, McIlroy and Schauffele! I think it’s great if the best players in the world shoot to the top of the leaderboard and then get to play in the same group. When you’re hand-picking the opening-round groups, though? This is dessert as appetizers — tasty, but a little much. Show a little restraint. Now, with that said…
…I’ll eagerly watch these three different incredible golfing talents duke it out, side by side. The world’s newest career Grand Slam winner, the defending PGA champ and the World No. 1 each get it done a different way and it’s cool to see their styles show down. Schauffele is quietly playing his way back into top-tier form while McIlroy and Scheffler are playing well quite — and loudly. Hell of a week on tap.
