Patrick Reed withdrew from the Northern Trust on Wednesday, the day before the event started, citing an ankle injury. But after he returned home to the Houston area, he was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, according to reports from Golf Channel and CBS.
According to a report from Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis, Reed was treated at The Houston Methodist Hospital, where he is still recovering.
“I just want to update everyone,” Reed wrote in a statement released by Lewis. “First and foremost – thank you all for your support. The good news is, my ankle is okay. The bad news is I’ve been in the hospital with bilateral pneumonia. I’m on the road to recovery, once I’m cleared from the doctors – I look forward to returning. I wish you all the best and I can’t wait to get back out there!
“Thank you so much for your support, it means a lot to me. Also, a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at The Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center.”

During the CBS broadcast, Amanda Balionis reported that she’d texted with Patrick’s wife Justine, who provided an update on his condition.
“I’m going to read you the text message that Justine just sent me,” she said, then read the following:
“Patrick is still in the hospital but he’s doing much better. It was very scary the last few days, and right now we don’t have a timeline on his recovery. I never count him out but I do know he will not be able to play [next week’s] BMW. We are just taking it one day at a time. We are following all of the doctor’s orders and you can sure bet as soon as they give him the go-ahead to play, he will. But our main concern right now is getting him back to 100%.
“We live our lives on a schedule, it’s very hard to be told there is no timeline, it just depends how fast his body can safely recover. I want to express to you and everyone how appreciative we are of everyone’s support.”
Neither report clarified the cause of the diagnosis or any related details on how Reed contracted pneumonia.
Reed is currently No. 22 in the FedEx Cup standings and may fall outside the top 30 after next week’s BMW Championship, which would mean he’d miss the Tour Championship the following week. He is also ranked No. 9 in the U.S. Ryder Cup rankings, which means he won’t automatically qualify. But Reed he’s among the favorites to be selected by team captain Steve Stricker on Sept. 8, when he’ll choose the remaining six members of the team.
