It’s Patrick Reed vs. Danny Willett in Dubai…and Sergio is lurking

November 17, 2018

Two recent Masters champions are battling it out at the DP World Championship in Dubai. Care to wager a guess? It’s Patrick Reed and…Danny Willett.

The 2018 and 2016 Masters champs are all tied up at 14 under atop the Euro Tour leaderboard, two shots ahead of the surging Lee Westwood, and four shots ahead of 2017 Masters champ Sergio Garcia.

While Reed has had a headline-filled season — for better or worse — Willett’s 2018 has been one of incremental gains. The 31-year-old from Yorkshire, England struggled mightily after winning his green jacket, but has made nine cuts on the European Tour this summer, finishing five of them in the top 20. None of those performances, however, found him in the top 5. There remains another step for him between contending and an elite finish. Perhaps this will be his weekend?

Reed, on the other hand, is continuing his bi-Tour membership practices strong by playing out the end of the Race to Dubai. And with a win, he’ll earn more than $2 million — $1.33 million from the event and $750,000 for finishing second to Francesco Molinari in the Race to Dubai. Yes, it pays well to play well in Europe, too.
