You can own Tiger Woods’ sleek blue-black Rolex … for a hefty price

For most people, a watch is a luxury purchase. It’s a style piece, a fashion accessory and, in some cases, even a sign of status.

For Tiger Woods, a watch holds a little bit more significance. In a life devoted (mostly) to the road, a watch can be one of the few constants, trekking with Tiger through many a private jet, clubhouse locker room and hotel suite.

It stands to reason that even if a watch is still considered a “luxury purchase” for someone like Tiger, there’s legitimate value to that transaction.

According to the Rolex website, the watch was designed “in commemoration of deep-sea diver James Cameron’s historic solo dive into the deepest place on earth: the bottom of the Mariana Trench.” The watch was built for use in extreme depths and its face reflects the colors of the deep ocean in a bold shock of blue and black.

Its case is built with Oystersteel, an alloy custom-made for Rolex that lives in the same family as those used in the aerospace and chemical industries. What that gives you, the wearer, is a watch that has “an exceptional finish once polished and maintains its beauty even in the harshest environments.”

Some watches are unique because they’re appreciating assets. If you purchase a very expensive watch (like many Rolexes), it’s possible (or even likely) for it to be worth more than you paid for it in several years’ time. The limited supply, constantly shifting design and extremely high level of craftsmanship associated with Rolexes lead to both high prices and a high return on investment.
