The Northern Trust final-round preview
Things are tight at the top of the leaderboard at Liberty National as Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith entered Monday’s final round tied for the lead at 16 under while Erik van Rooyen sat one shot back. How did we get here? A steady weekend from Rahm and some lights-out scoring from Smith and van Rooyen.
Rahm opened the tournament with a round of 63 and followed it up with a pair of 67s to climb to 16 under, while his fellow competitors in the final group stormed up the leaderboard on Moving Day. Smith flirted with a 59 in Round 3 before settling for 60, while van Rooyen had a tidy day of his own as he fired 62 to reach 15 under. Rahm is seeking his second career win in the FedEx Cup playoffs, while Smith and van Rooyen each try to capture their first.
Another shot behind the leaders in the final grouping is a pair of Tour winners in Justin Thomas and Tony Finau at 14 under. Five players are T5 at 13 under, including young star Viktor Hovland.
