Cardinals pitching coach makes TWO aces prior to Monday NLCS game

October 14, 2019

Not much has gone well for the St. Louis Cardinals in the last five days. The club lost the first two games of the National League Championship Series at home to the Washington Nationals. But if today’s major golf accomplishment means anything for their luck, they might still have a chance.

Longtime pitching coach Mike Maddux made not one but two aces Monday morning at Army-Navy Golf Club in Arlington, Virginia, about six miles from Nationals Park. This comes according to Cardinals manager Mike Shildt, who spoke with reporters prior to Monday night’s game.

Maddux apparently has now made six aces in his playing career. For those baseball fans reading GOLF.com for the first time, that’s really good.

Throughout the 89 years the PGA Tour has existed, only three players have ever accomplished two aces in a tournament round, and the most recent player to accomplish the feat was Brian Harman at the 2015 Northern Trust playoff event.

For a recreational player, the odds of the same player making two aces in the same round are … 67 million to one. Sixty-seven million. So if you see Mr. Maddux, congratulate him. He’s one of the luckiest golfers on the planet right now.
